Chapter 11 - THE BROTHERS

Lucas and I began spending time together.

At first it was awkward.

We didn't know each other.

We had different childhoods.

Different memories.

Different lives.

But we had the same father.

One afternoon, we visited his old workshop.

Lucas found a wooden box.

Inside were two letters.

One for me.

One for him.

I opened mine.

Ethan,

If you're reading this, you've met your brother.

Don't ask him to become like you.

Don't ask yourself to become like him.

Just be brothers.

I smiled.

Lucas opened his letter.

He laughed.

“What?”

“Dad told me to stop blaming you for things you didn't know.”

I looked at him.

“Did you?”

“For years.”

“Why?”

“Because I thought you got the life I should have had.”

I nodded.

“I thought you were the brother Dad chose instead of me.”

He looked at me.

“Maybe he didn't choose.”

“Maybe he protected both of us.”

Lucas smiled.

“That sounds like him.”

We stood inside the old workshop.

May you like

For the first time, I didn't feel like I had lost a brother.

I felt like I had found one.
