Chapter 5 - THE TABLE TURNED

The next morning, the foundation board held an emergency meeting.
Every major investor attended.
Every lawyer.
Every director.
Everyone had heard about the pool incident.
The news had spread across Beverly Hills.
But nobody knew the real story.
I walked into the boardroom carrying the original deed.
My mother sat beside me.
Rebecca sat across the table.
Arthur stood behind us.
I placed the deed down.
“This foundation has been targeted for years.”
The room became silent.
I explained everything.
The stolen money.
The forged signatures.
Thomas.
Vanessa.
My uncle.
The hidden trust.
The attempted property transfer.
When I finished, nobody spoke.
Then one board member stood.
“Mr. Carter, why should we believe you?”
I smiled.
“Because I brought the recordings.”
The screens turned on.
My father's voice filled the room.
Then Thomas's.
Then the evidence.
Bank transfers.
Forged documents.
Private contracts.
Photographs.
Every lie.
Every crime.
The board members stared in shock.
One of them began crying.
“My God.”
I looked at them.
“My father built this foundation to protect children.”
I held up the deed.
“Not to make our family richer.”
Then the doors opened.
Police officers entered.
Behind them was my uncle.
He was handcuffed.
He looked directly at me.
“You think you've won?”
I answered:
“Yes.”
He smiled.
“You still don't know what your father left you.”
I frowned.
“What?”
He looked at my mother.
“She knows.”
Everyone turned toward Mom.
She closed her eyes.
Then whispered:
“Your father left one final instruction.”
“What?”
“If Thomas was ever exposed…”
She looked at me.
“You were supposed to sell everything.”
I froze.
“Why?”
“Because the foundation was never safe.”
She handed me an envelope.
I opened it.
Inside was my father's final letter.
Ethan,
If you are reading this, the people who tried to control our family have finally exposed themselves.
Do not protect the fortune.
Protect the mission.
Sell every asset that can be used against you.
Keep only the foundation.
And give the foundation to the people who need it most.
I stared at the letter.
My father wanted me to give away the fortune.
Not inherit it.
Not control it.
Give it away.
I looked at Mom.
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because I was afraid you would do exactly what he asked.”
I smiled.
“Then Dad knew me better than you did.”
She laughed through her tears.
For the first time in years, she smiled.
I turned toward the board.
“Today, Carter Holdings will be sold.”
Everyone gasped.
“All proceeds will go into the foundation.”
Arthur smiled.
Rebecca nodded.
My mother squeezed my hand.
Then my attorney placed one final document in front of me.
“There is one problem.”
“What?”
He pointed to the signature line.
“The foundation still has one unknown beneficiary.”
I looked at the name.
It was not mine.
It wasn't Mom's.
It wasn't my father's.
It was a name I had never seen before.
LUCAS CARTER.
My heart stopped.
“Who is Lucas Carter?”
My mother slowly stood.
Her face had gone completely white.
She whispered:
“Your father's son.”
I stared at her.
“My father had another child?”
She nodded.
“And he's alive.”
The room went silent.
Then my phone vibrated.
A message appeared from an unknown number.
You found my name.
A second message followed.
Now come find me.
And beneath it was an address.
The address was inside the children's hospital my foundation had built.
I looked at Arthur.
He understood immediately.

The story wasn't over.
Not even close.
