Chapter 14 - MOM CHANGED THE WILL ONE LAST TIMEAt seventy-nine, Mom revised the estate plan again.
Everyone panicked when Eleanor called.
Mom found that hilarious.
“Good.”
“What changed?” I asked.
“Nothing dramatic.”
Emily remained principal personal beneficiary.
But Mom added direct charitable gifts.
Education trusts for grandchildren.
Employee emergency funds.
Specific personal items to each son.
David received Dad’s old fountain pen.
Thomas received his fishing boat.
I received Dad’s field watch.
Emily received Mom’s wedding ring.
No one received those items because of financial value.
They received them because memory mattered.
Then Mom created three letters.
One for each son.
Mine said:
Luke, absence is not abandonment unless you decide never to return. You returned. Stay present without making yourself responsible for everything.
I cried.
Thomas’s said:
You do not need inheritance to prove your life counted.
David’s said:
I hope one day we speak without a document between us.
And Emily’s:
I should have made the world call you my daughter sooner. I am sorry I let fear steal years from us.
That was the real estate plan.
