Chapter 9 - THE COMPANY WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE A CROWNThe Reynolds Industrial board met after the guardianship scheme became public internally.

David was suspended.

Thomas resigned from investment oversight.

Professional leadership took greater control.

Then someone asked whether Emily would assume the family seat.

She almost laughed.

“I barely understand industrial machining.”

The board chair replied:

“That has not stopped several family members before.”

Even Mom laughed.

Emily accepted a limited stewardship role.

No executive job.

No throne.

She would represent long-term family interests alongside independent directors.

I joined an ethics and operations committee remotely.

Not because I suddenly wanted the company.

Because I finally understood that refusing power completely can create a vacuum for people who want it too much.

Balance mattered.

Dad’s final structure made sense.

No single child controlled everything.

Employee ownership expanded.

The family foundation became independent.

Real estate moved into protected trusts.

The company stopped being a prize.

It became an institution.

That was healthier.
