I rejected it.

Not because I controlled Noah’s feelings.

Because that sentence was not accountability.

Months later, another letter came.

Better.

I told you that you were not real family because I wanted you to feel uncertain about your place.

Then:

I did that because I was afraid Mason would never have what you had.

Then:

That fear belonged to me, not you.

Good.

Finally:

You did not cause my choices. Mason did not cause them either.

That mattered.

Noah read the letter with his therapist.

He did not reply.

Two years later, he chose to send one sentence:

I hope you never make Mason think he has to beat someone to belong.
