Chapter 6 - RACHEL’S LETTERThe trust file contained a sealed envelope.

Not from Dad.

From Rachel.

My first wife.

I had forgotten she wrote it during her illness.

Margaret said:

“Your father asked us to keep this with Noah’s trust records.”

The envelope read:

FOR DANIEL — IF ANYONE EVER MAKES NOAH FEEL LIKE HE HAS TO EARN HIS PLACE

My hands shook.

I opened it.

Rachel wrote:

You will probably remarry. I hope you do.

Then:

Please never make a future family compete with me.

I stopped.

That sentence felt almost prophetic.

And never let anyone make Noah compete with another child for legitimacy.

My throat tightened.

Then:

If he inherits money, teach him it does not make him more important.

If another child joins your family, teach that child the same thing.

I had to stop reading.

Because somehow both boys were living the opposite lesson.

Noah had been told inheritance decided belonging.

Mason had been told inheritance could prove he was more real.

Rachel had seen the danger before any of us.

May you like

Not Vanessa specifically.

Just human insecurity.
