Chapter 14 - EMILY’S AGE-SEVEN VIDEOOn Sophie’s seventh birthday, we watched another message from Emily.

She appeared wearing a knit cap.

“Seven already?”

Sophie shouted at the screen:

“Yes!”

Emily continued.

“By seven, you probably have opinions.”

Sophie looked at me.

“A lot.”

I nodded.

“Too many.”

She threw popcorn at me.

Emily smiled.

“I hope you are learning that your chair is a tool, not a definition.”

Sophie became quiet.

“And I hope nobody ever makes you feel grateful for basic dignity.”

My throat tightened.

Emily had not predicted Claire.

She had simply understood the world her disabled daughter might face.

Adults confusing help with control.

Then:

“If someone helps you, you can appreciate them.”

A pause.

“But you never owe them ownership of your choices.”

Sophie looked at me.

“That means Claire.”

“Partly.”

“It means everyone.”

That surprised me.

Then she pointed at me.

“You too.”

I smiled.

May you like

“Yes.”

Especially me.
