Chapter 9 - SOPHIE ASKED IF SHE WAS RICHThe story eventually leaked into local media because of the trust dispute.

We protected Sophie’s identity as much as possible.
Still, another child at therapy apparently overheard something.
One afternoon, Sophie asked:
“Daddy, am I rich?”
I nearly dropped my coffee.
“Why?”
“Liam says I have sixty money.”
I laughed despite myself.
“Sixty money?”
“Million.”
She said it like she had learned a new dinosaur species.
I sat beside her.
“You have a trust.”
“What’s that?”
“Money and property adults manage for you.”
“Can I buy a horse?”
“No.”
She frowned.
“What is the point?”
“Excellent question.”
Then I explained as simply as I could.
Her grandfather invented things.
Her mother inherited part of them.
Her mother wanted the value protected for Sophie’s future.
Medical care.
Education.
Accessible housing.
Choices.
She listened.
Then asked:
“Did Claire hurt me because I have money?”
My heart hurt.
“Partly.”
“Was it my fault?”
“No.”
She looked skeptical.
“If I didn’t have money—”
“No.”
I interrupted gently.
“Money did not make Claire choose what she chose.”
“What did?”
“Claire.”
Sophie considered that.
Then:
“Can I still get a horse when I’m eighteen?”
“We’ll revisit.”
She grinned.
Good.
I wanted money to become boring.
Not frightening.
May you like
Not identity.
Just one part of life.
