Chapter 6 - EMILY’S LETTER TO CLAIREInside the flower box, beneath the trust papers, was an envelope labeled:

TO THE WOMAN WHO MAY ONE DAY LOVE DANIEL

I had never seen it.

Claire had.

That explained another part of her reaction.

I opened it.

Emily wrote it during hospice care.

Her handwriting grew weaker across the pages.

I don’t know your name.

I swallowed.

I hope Daniel remarries. He is terrible at being alone and pretends otherwise.

Despite everything, I smiled.

Then:

If you love him, you will eventually meet Sophie.

Please understand that I am not your competition.

Rebecca started crying.

I kept reading.

Sophie may call you Mom someday. She may not. Let that be hers.

My throat tightened.

If she loves you, that does not erase me. If she remembers me, that does not diminish you.

Claire had read those words.

And still demanded the title.

Emily continued:

Her body may make her dependent on adults in ways other children are not. Never confuse that dependence with ownership.

I had to stop.

That sentence felt written for the exact future Emily feared.

Then:

If you ever feel jealous of a dead woman, please tell Daniel. He is emotionally dense but occasionally useful.

Rebecca laughed through tears.

So did I.

Then the final paragraph.

And if you cannot love Sophie without needing her to replace me with you, please leave before you hurt her.

Claire had found that letter one week earlier.

Maybe that was why she became more desperate.

Emily had named her exact weakness from beyond the grave.

Not magically.

Not because she predicted Claire.

Because she understood grief.

And human insecurity.

Claire could have read the letter and stopped.

May you like

Instead, she doubled down.

That distinction mattered.
