Chapter 10: The Woman Who Finally Confessed
Vanessa's last message stayed on my phone long after I stopped reading it.
I warned you not to open that box. Now I can't protect you anymore.
I showed it to Daniel.
He read it twice, then placed my phone on the table.
"Marcus, don't contact her.""
"She knows what happened to Emily.""
"Possibly.""
"She knows what happened to my father too.""
Daniel looked at Robert Hayes.
The investigator was already reviewing the documents from the storage locker.
"There's something we haven't considered," Robert said.
"Vanessa may not be the person directing everything. She could be working for someone else.""
I stared at him.
"Like Graham?""
"Possibly. But Graham is missing, and someone with access to his office removed several files before his disappearance.""
Daniel picked up the email.
"Whatever happened, we need to preserve this evidence and get the authorities involved.""
I nodded.
But before we could leave, my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered without speaking.
"Marcus?""
Her voice sounded different.
Not angry.
Not confident.
Afraid.
"What do you want?""
"I need to see you.""
"You've had plenty of opportunities to talk.""
"Not about Maya. About Emily.""
I looked at Daniel.
He shook his head.
"Everything you need to say can go through my attorney.""
"Please.""
The word was barely audible.
I had heard Vanessa apologize before. Usually, it came after an argument, followed by an explanation of why I had misunderstood her.
This time, there was no explanation.
Only fear.
"Where are you?"" I asked.
"At home.""
"Stay there.""
I ended the call.
Daniel immediately objected.
"Marcus, you shouldn't go alone.""
"I'm not.""
We arranged for Robert to accompany me, while Daniel contacted the authorities about the documents.
When I arrived at the house, Vanessa was sitting in the living room.
The room looked exactly as it had before.
The expensive furniture.
The decorative pillows.
The framed photographs.
Except Maya's picture was missing from the mantel.
I noticed immediately.
"Where is her photograph?""
Vanessa didn't look up.
"I put it away.""
"Why?""
She rubbed her hands together.
"Because every time I look at it, I remember what happened.""
I stood across from her.
"What happened to Emily?""
Vanessa looked toward Robert.
"Who is he?""
"Someone who is documenting this conversation.""
Her face tightened.
"I want to speak privately.""
"That's not happening.""
She closed her eyes.
Then she began.
"Emily was investigating Graham.""
"I know.""
"She discovered that he had been moving money through several accounts. Your father had found the same thing years earlier.""
"Why were you involved?""
Vanessa looked at the floor.
"Because Graham hired me.""
"To do what?""
"Administrative work. Organizing documents. Managing client accounts.""
"And stealing money?""
Her head snapped up.
"I didn't steal anything.""
"Then why was your name on the transfers?""
"Because Graham used my accounts.""
I stared at her.
"You're telling me you allowed him to move money through accounts in your name?""
She nodded slowly.
"He promised it was temporary. He said it was part of an investment structure.""
"Did you know it was illegal?""
"Not at first.""
Robert interrupted.
"When did you find out?""
Vanessa looked at him.
"After Emily discovered the records.""
I stepped closer.
"What did Emily know?""
"She had found copies of transactions that connected Graham to your father's investigation. She was planning to give them to a lawyer.""
"And you told Graham?""
Vanessa began crying.
"I was scared.""
"So you told him.""
She nodded.
I felt sick.
"Did you go to the hospital that night?""
Vanessa covered her face.
"Yes.""
"Why?""
"Emily called me. She said she had found something in the medication records and wanted me to explain it.""
I stared at her.
"What did you bring her?""
"Her prescription.""
"Was it the correct medication?""
Vanessa didn't answer.
"Was it?""
"I don't know.""
Robert leaned forward.
"You don't know, or you don't want to say?""
Vanessa began shaking.
"Graham gave me the bottle.""
The room went silent.
I felt as though someone had struck me.
"What?""
"He said Emily was confused. He told me the doctor had approved a different dosage.""
"Did you check?""
"No.""
"Did you give it to her?""
Vanessa nodded.
I took a step backward.
"How many times?""
"I don't remember.""
"How many times, Vanessa?""
"Three.""
I looked at Robert.
He was writing everything down.
I turned back to my wife.
"Emily died two days later.""
Vanessa started sobbing.
"I know.""
"Did you know the medication was wrong?""
"No. I swear I didn't.""
"Then why did you remove the medical report?""
She shook her head.
"I didn't remove it.""
"You signed the authorization.""
"Graham told me to.""
"Why?""
"Because he said the report would expose his company. He said the doctors had made a mistake and that the report would be misunderstood.""
I stared at her.
"And you believed him?""
She looked up.
"No.""
That single word hung between us.
Vanessa wiped her face.
"I knew something was wrong.""
My hands curled into fists.
"You knew?""
"I suspected.""
"You let me spend seven years believing I wasn't there when my wife needed me.""
She began crying harder.
"Marcus, I didn't know she would die.""
"But you knew she was being given the wrong medication.""
"I thought Graham would fix it.""
"You thought?""
She couldn't answer.
I walked toward the window.
For years, I had imagined Emily's final hours.
I had imagined her alone, frightened, perhaps calling for me.
And now I was hearing that someone I had trusted had stood beside her, knowing something was wrong.
I turned around.
"Why did you marry me?""
Vanessa looked at me.
At first, she said nothing.
Then she whispered, "Because Graham told me to.""
The room seemed to tilt.
"What?""
"He wanted to know whether Emily had left copies of the records. He thought you might have them.""
I stared at her.
"So you approached me because of the investigation?""
"At first.""
"And then?""
Vanessa began shaking her head.
"Then I fell in love with you.""
I laughed.
It was a bitter, empty sound.
"That's what you're going with?""
"It's true.""
"You married a man whose wife had died under suspicious circumstances, moved into his home, and tried to take his daughter's inheritance. And you want me to believe you loved us?""
"I did love you.""
"Then why did you hurt Maya?""
Vanessa looked down.
"I was trying to protect Brielle.""
"From what?""
"From losing everything.""
I stared at her.
"She had a bedroom, food, money, and a family. What exactly was she losing?""
Vanessa finally raised her voice.
"She was losing her future! Graham had promised to help her. He said the money would come through. When he disappeared, everything collapsed.""
I looked at Robert.
"Did Brielle know?""
Vanessa went silent.
I understood.
"She knew about the financial transfers?""
Vanessa nodded.
"She knew about the inheritance?""
Another nod.
"She helped you forge my signature?""
Vanessa began crying again.
"She didn't understand what we were doing.""
"She's twenty-two years old.""
"She's my daughter!""
"And Maya is mine!""
My voice echoed through the living room.
Vanessa flinched.
For the first time, I didn't care whether she was upset.
I had spent twelve years trying to keep peace between people who had never been willing to protect my child.
That ended today.
I took out my phone.
"Robert, have you recorded everything?""
He nodded.
Vanessa looked up.
"Marcus, please.""
I stared at her.
"You just confessed to giving Emily medication supplied by Graham, concealing medical records, and helping him hide financial transactions.""
"I didn't kill Emily.""
"I haven't accused you of that.""
"But you're thinking it.""
I didn't answer.
A knock sounded at the front door.
Robert stood.
"I believe that's the investigators.""
Vanessa's face drained of color.
Before Robert could reach the door, she grabbed my wrist.
"Marcus, there's something else.""
I looked at her.
"What?""
She leaned closer.
"Emily wasn't the only person Graham wanted silenced.""
My blood ran cold.
"Who else?""
Vanessa glanced toward the staircase.
May you like
Then she whispered:
"Your father.""
