Chapter 4: The Father They Tried to Destroy
I read Vanessa's emergency custody petition three times before I understood what she was attempting to do.
She wasn't simply trying to take Maya away from me.
She was trying to convince a judge that I was an unfit father.
The woman who had moved my ten-year-old daughter onto a kitchen floor was now claiming that I had forced her to sleep there.
And Brielle had signed a statement supporting the lie.
I stood in Daniel Brooks's office, staring at the computer screen.
"Tell me this isn't going to work.""
Daniel removed his glasses.
"Marcus, I won't lie to you. Emergency custody petitions are taken seriously. The court has to consider the child's immediate safety.""
"But the accusations are false.""
"Then we need evidence.""
I placed the handwritten house rules on his desk.
"Is this enough?""
He examined the paper carefully.
"It's important. But we need more. Photographs, messages, financial records, witnesses. Anything that establishes what actually happened.""
I pulled out my phone.
"I have photographs of Maya sleeping on the kitchen floor.""
"Good.""
"I have the bank document showing Vanessa tried to access the trust.""
"Also good.""
Daniel opened another file.
"There's something else. The petition claims Vanessa has been Maya's primary caregiver during your frequent business trips.""
"That's technically true.""
"Yes, but it also claims you routinely left Maya without supervision and that Vanessa had to intervene.""
I shook my head.
"I arranged for a nanny whenever I traveled.""
"Do you have records?""
"Every payment. Every schedule. The nanny's name is Patricia.""
Daniel wrote something down.
"Can she testify?""
"Absolutely.""
He leaned forward.
"Marcus, there's a difference between proving that Vanessa has behaved badly and proving that Maya is safe with you. We need to establish both.""
I nodded.
My phone vibrated.
Claire.
I answered immediately.
"Is Maya okay?""
"She's fine. She's watching cartoons.""
"Did Vanessa contact you again?""
"Three times. She left two voicemails.""
"Don't answer her.""
"Marcus, I need to tell you something. Maya heard Brielle talking to someone on the phone last night.""
"Who?""
"She doesn't know. But she heard Brielle say, 'Once the hearing is over, the money won't be a problem anymore.''"
I looked at Daniel.
He had heard every word.
"Did Maya hear anything else?"" I asked.
Claire hesitated.
"She said Brielle mentioned a signature.""
I closed my eyes.
"Thank you. Keep her there.""
When I hung up, Daniel was already making notes.
"Do you think Brielle has been involved in the financial activity?""
"I think we need to find out.""
Daniel nodded.
"Don't make accusations yet. Let the evidence speak.""
I spent the next four hours collecting everything I could.
I downloaded the nanny's invoices, retrieved photographs from our home security system, and printed messages showing that I had regularly checked on Maya during my trips.
At 4:30 p.m., Patricia called.
"Mr. Carter, I heard something happened.""
Patricia had worked for our family for almost five years. She had cared for Maya after school and sometimes stayed overnight when I traveled.
"Patricia, I need your help.""
"Of course.""
"Did Vanessa ever tell you Maya was having problems at home?""
There was a long silence.
Then Patricia said, "I was afraid this would happen.""
My grip tightened around the phone.
"What do you mean?""
"Mr. Carter, I was asked not to come back to the house.""
"When?""
"About two weeks ago.""
"By whom?""
"Vanessa.""
"Why?""
Patricia lowered her voice.
"She said Maya didn't need a nanny anymore. She said Brielle would be helping around the house.""
I stared at the desk.
"Did you see Maya before you left?""
"Yes. She was crying.""
"Why?""
"She told me she wasn't allowed to use her bedroom anymore.""
I swallowed.
"Did you report it?""
"I called Vanessa the next day. She told me Maya was perfectly happy and that I shouldn't interfere.""
Patricia paused.
"Mr. Carter, there's something I haven't told you.""
"What?""
"The night before I was dismissed, I saw Brielle carrying boxes from Maya's room. One of them contained Maya's school certificates and some documents.""
"What documents?""
"I couldn't tell. But I remember Brielle saying something about needing to clear out the room before you came home.""
I looked at Daniel.
He wrote down every word.
"Patricia, would you be willing to provide a statement?""
"Yes. And if Maya needs me, I'll be there.""
I thanked her.
For the first time that day, I felt we had a chance.
But Vanessa wasn't finished.
At 6:12 p.m., my phone rang.
Her name appeared on the screen.
I answered.
"Marcus.""
"Don't hang up.""
"I'm listening.""
She sounded unusually calm.
"I know you've been talking to Daniel.""
"He's my attorney.""
"You're making a mistake.""
I looked at the custody petition.
"Which part? The forged document or the false allegations?""
Her voice sharpened.
"You don't understand what's happening. Brielle and I are trying to protect this family.""
"By taking my daughter away?""
"By giving Maya some stability.""
"She had stability before you moved her into the kitchen.""
Vanessa sighed.
"Marcus, you have no idea how difficult Maya has become.""
"She's ten.""
"She constantly complains. She doesn't respect Brielle. She gets jealous whenever I spend time with my own daughter.""
"Your daughter is twenty-two years old.""
"That's irrelevant.""
"No. It's the entire problem.""
There was a pause.
Then Vanessa said, "You should withdraw the custody dispute.""
I laughed bitterly.
"You filed it.""
"And I can resolve it.""
"How?""
"Sign a temporary guardianship agreement. Let me make decisions for Maya while you focus on work.""
I stared at the wall.
"You want me to give you control over my daughter?""
"Temporarily.""
"Why?""
"Because you're clearly overwhelmed.""
I lowered my voice.
"Vanessa, did you forge my signature?""
She didn't answer.
"Did you?""
"Be careful, Marcus.""
"That's not an answer.""
"You'll regret turning this into a legal war.""
The call ended.
Daniel looked up from his notes.
"Did she threaten you?""
"She told me I'd regret it.""
He closed the folder.
"Then we prepare for tomorrow.""
That evening, I went to Claire's house.
Maya was sitting at the dining table drawing a picture.
When she saw me, she jumped from her chair.
"Dad!""
I hugged her tightly.
"Hey, princess.""
She looked at my face.
"Are we going home?""
I knelt beside her.
"Not tonight. But we're going to make sure you have a safe place to sleep.""
She nodded.
Then she handed me the drawing.
It showed a small house with a blue roof, a yellow sun, and three people standing in front.
Me.
Maya.
And a woman with gray hair.
Grandma.
I smiled.
"That's beautiful.""
Maya looked at the picture.
"I put Grandma there because she always said I should have a place where nobody can make me leave.""
My eyes burned.
I kissed the top of her head.
"She was right.""
Maya hesitated.
"Dad?""
"Yes?""
"If the judge believes Vanessa, will I have to live with her?""
I held both her hands.
"No matter what happens tomorrow, I will fight for you.""
She nodded slowly.
Then she whispered, "I have something else to tell you.""
I leaned closer.
"Go ahead.""
Maya looked toward Claire, who was washing dishes.
Then she lowered her voice.
"When Vanessa made me sleep downstairs, she told me to practice saying something.""
"What?""
Maya swallowed.
"That you get angry when you drink.""
I went completely still.
"I don't drink, sweetheart.""
"I know.""
"Why did she want you to say that?""
Maya's eyes filled with tears.
"She said the judge would believe me if I cried.""
I felt a cold wave move through my body.
This wasn't simply a custody dispute.
Someone had been preparing my daughter to lie about me.
And I suddenly understood why Vanessa had been so confident about the hearing.
May you like
She believed she had already prepared the perfect witness.
My own child.
