Chapter 13: The Brother Who Never Drowned
I didn't sleep that night.
I sat at Claire's kitchen table with Emily's letter open on my phone, staring at the name that had turned my entire life upside down.
Michael Carter.
My younger brother had supposedly drowned eleven years earlier.
His boat had been found overturned near the northern shoreline. Search teams had spent four days looking for him. No body was recovered, but the authorities eventually declared him presumed dead.
We held a memorial.
My mother never recovered from it.
And now Emily's letter suggested Michael had been alive when she was dying.
At seven the next morning, I called Detective Bennett.
"I need to know whether my brother is alive.""
There was a pause.
"Mr. Carter, we're looking into the name in the photograph.""
"His name is Michael Carter. He disappeared eleven years ago.""
"Do you have a photograph?""
I sent her one.
It was an old family picture taken at my parents' house. Michael stood beside me, grinning, one arm around my shoulders.
He had been twenty-six.
"Was his body ever recovered?"" she asked.
"No.""
"Do you remember who identified his belongings?""
"My father.""
"Was there an official identification?""
I thought back.
The boat had been found with Michael's wallet inside. His jacket was caught on a piece of wreckage. There had been no body.
"No," I admitted.
"Then we'll examine that disappearance too.""
I hung up and looked toward the hallway.
Maya was still asleep.
I didn't want her to wake up and find me frightened.
She had already endured enough.
At nine, Detective Bennett called again.
"We found something.""
I sat upright.
"What?""
"Michael Carter obtained a driver's license under a different surname eight years ago. The photograph appears to match your brother.""
"Where is he?""
"We're tracing the address.""
"Is he connected to Graham?""
"We don't know yet.""
I rubbed my forehead.
"How could he be alive?""
"That's what we'd like to ask him.""
An hour later, Robert Hayes arrived at Claire's house.
He carried a thin folder.
"I found something in the records from your father's old office," he said.
He placed a photograph on the table.
It showed Graham Whitmore standing outside a hotel with a man whose face was partly turned away.
I recognized the man's posture immediately.
Michael always stood with his shoulders slightly forward, as if he were preparing to make a joke.
"That's him.""
Robert nodded.
"The photograph was taken six years ago. Three months after Emily died.""
I stared at it.
"Why was Graham meeting my brother?""
"That's not all.""
Robert opened the folder.
Inside was a photocopy of an old bank transfer.
The recipient was listed as Michael Reed.
The account had received monthly payments from a company associated with Whitmore Financial.
I looked at the date.
The payments began shortly after Michael's disappearance.
"Michael Reed," I whispered.
"His assumed identity," Robert said.
"And the payments continued until about eighteen months ago.""
"Why did they stop?""
"That's what I'm trying to find out.""
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
"Marcus?""
The voice was older, rougher, but unmistakable.
I stood so quickly my chair fell backward.
"Michael?""
Silence.
Then a quiet breath.
"Yes.""
I couldn't speak.
"Where are you?""
"I can't tell you over the phone.""
"Where have you been for eleven years?""
"I know what you think.""
"I don't care what you think I think. You disappeared. We buried you without a body. Mom spent years crying herself to sleep.""
"I know.""
"You let us believe you were dead!""
"I had no choice.""
I laughed in disbelief.
"No choice? You had eleven years to call me.""
"Marcus, listen. Graham had people watching the family. After Dad died, I found out what he was doing. I tried to get evidence, but he discovered me.""
"Then why didn't you go to the police?""
"Because the first officer I spoke to gave Graham everything I told him.""
I gripped the phone.
"Where is Emily in all this?""
Michael went quiet.
"She found me.""
My blood turned cold.
"What?""
"She discovered I was alive. She knew I had documents connecting Graham to Dad's investigation.""
"Did she know you were working with him?""
"No. I was trying to get out.""
"Then why does her letter say you came to the hospital with Vanessa?""
Michael exhaled shakily.
"Because I did.""
I closed my eyes.
"Explain.""
"I went there to warn Emily. Vanessa had told Graham that Emily was going to give the documents to you. I thought I could get her out before he did something.""
"Did you bring medication?""
"No!""
His voice cracked.
"I swear to you, Marcus, I never touched her medication.""
"Then why were you there?""
"Because Vanessa said she had already given Emily something. She told me Emily was having a reaction and needed help.""
I felt sick.
"You knew?""
"I didn't know what she'd given her. When I arrived, Emily was frightened. She told me the medication wasn't hers.""
"Did you call for help?""
"I tried.""
"Then what happened?""
"Vanessa took my phone. She said she had already called the doctor. Then Graham arrived.""
I pressed my hand against my forehead.
"Why didn't you stay?""
Michael's voice broke.
"Because Graham showed me a photograph of you.""
I froze.
"He said if I stayed, you would be next.""
I looked toward Maya's bedroom.
"Where are you now?""
"At a motel outside the city. I have something you need to see.""
"Why should I trust you?""
"You shouldn't. Not yet.""
That answer surprised me.
Michael continued.
"But I can prove what happened to Dad. And I can prove what Graham did to Emily.""
"Then come here.""
"I can't.""
"Michael—"
"Marcus, Graham isn't missing.""
I stopped breathing.
"What?""
"He's been using another identity. He's been hiding from the people who were supposed to protect him.""
"Where is he?""
Michael lowered his voice.
"He's coming back for the original records.""
I looked at Robert.
He had heard enough to understand.
"Send me your location," I said.
Michael hesitated.
Then he whispered:
"One more thing. Vanessa wasn't the only person who helped Graham. There's someone inside the police department who's been protecting him for years.""
The call ended.
A moment later, a message arrived with an address.
Robert immediately contacted Detective Bennett.
We arranged to meet Michael at a secure location with investigators present.
Before leaving, I checked on Maya.
She was awake, sitting on her bed with Emily's photograph in her hands.
"Are you going somewhere, Dad?""
I sat beside her.
"I need to find someone.""
"Someone bad?""
I hesitated.
"Someone I thought I'd lost a long time ago.""
Maya looked at the photograph.
"Like Mom?""
I kissed her forehead.
"Yes. A little like Mom.""
She held my hand.
"Come back.""
"I promise.""
The meeting location was an old roadside motel.
Detective Bennett and two officers arrived first. Robert and I followed.
A man stepped out of the last room.
His hair was gray at the temples. His face was thinner. There was a scar near his left eyebrow.
But I knew him.
Michael.
My brother.
For several seconds, neither of us moved.
Then he said my name.
"Marcus.""
I walked toward him.
I wanted to hit him.
I wanted to hug him.
I wanted to demand eleven years back.
Instead, I stopped in front of him.
"You're alive.""
Michael nodded.
"I'm sorry.""
I shook my head.
"Don't say that yet.""
He handed Detective Bennett a small black case.
"Everything Graham wanted destroyed is in here.""
She opened it.
Inside were original financial records, photographs, and a digital recorder.
Michael looked at me.
"There's one more thing.""
"What?""
He swallowed.
"Your father didn't die in that accident because Graham ordered someone to sabotage his car.""
I stared at him.
"Then who did?""
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
May you like
He looked directly at me.
"I did.""
