Chapter 7: The Key to My First Wife's Last Secret
I read Vanessa's message until the words stopped looking like words.
If you go to that bank, you'll destroy everything you think you know about your first wife.
For seven years, I had carried the memory of Emily's death like a stone inside my chest.
Now my second wife was telling me there was something I didn't know.
Something she apparently knew all along.
Daniel watched me put my phone on the desk.
"Don't respond," he said.
"She knows about the safety deposit box.""
"Which means she may know what is inside it.""
I held up the brass key.
"My mother specifically told me not to tell her.""
Daniel nodded.
"Then we need to find out how Vanessa discovered the account.""
I paced across his office.
"She was at the hospital when Emily died. She helped me arrange the funeral. She was there when my mother and I went through Emily's belongings.""
"Was she present when your mother discussed the estate?""
"Sometimes.""
"Did she ever have access to your mother's house?""
"Yes. She visited regularly.""
Daniel leaned back.
"Marcus, I want you to consider something. If Vanessa knew about the documents your mother kept, she may have spent years trying to locate them.""
I stopped walking.
"And the inheritance?""
"Possibly another reason.""
I looked at the bank key.
"Let's go.""
First National Bank was twenty minutes away.
Daniel arranged for the bank manager to meet us in a private office. After verifying my identity and the estate documentation, the manager retrieved the safety deposit box.
The box was smaller than I expected.
Inside were three things.
A sealed envelope.
A black USB drive.
And a small leather notebook with Emily's initials embossed on the cover.
My hands began trembling.
I recognized the notebook.
Emily used to carry it everywhere.
She wrote grocery lists in it, made notes about Maya's pediatrician appointments, and sometimes wrote little messages to me when she knew I was working late.
I opened it carefully.
The first few pages contained ordinary entries.
Buy Maya new shoes.
Call dentist.
Marcus likes the chicken soup with extra pepper.
Then, beginning about two months before her death, the entries changed.
Vanessa called again. She says she's worried about the household budget.
A few pages later:
I don't understand why she keeps asking about the insurance policy.
Then:
She came into the bedroom while I was sleeping. I woke up and found her looking through the drawer.
My stomach tightened.
Daniel pulled a chair closer.
I turned another page.
I asked Marcus whether Vanessa had been discussing money with him. He said she was only trying to help.
I swallowed.
Emily had never been suspicious without reason.
She was gentle, but she was observant.
The next entry was dated four days before her death.
I found the missing medication. It was not the one prescribed by Dr. Harris. I need to speak to him tomorrow.
I looked at Daniel.
"Missing medication?""
He nodded toward the USB drive.
"Let's see what's on it.""
The bank manager provided a computer.
The USB contained several scanned documents, photographs, and two audio recordings.
The first photograph showed a prescription bottle.
Emily's name was visible on the label.
The medication listed on the bottle didn't match the medication described in the hospital notes.
I felt sick.
The second file was a photograph of a handwritten medication schedule.
At the bottom, Emily had written:
Vanessa says the doctor changed the dosage. I haven't confirmed this.
Daniel opened the audio recording.
Emily's voice filled the small office.
"Margaret, I'm recording this because I don't know who else to trust.""
I closed my eyes.
Her voice sounded exactly as I remembered.
Warm.
Soft.
Alive.
"Vanessa keeps telling me that the doctor wants me to take these pills twice a day. But when I called the clinic, they said something different.""
There was a pause.
Then Emily continued.
"I don't want Marcus to worry. He's already working too hard, and I know he's trying to keep everything together.""
A faint sound came through the recording.
Then Emily spoke again.
"Something isn't right. I found another bottle in Vanessa's handbag. It has my name on it, but the prescription number is different.""
The recording ended.
I stared at the screen.
Daniel opened the second audio file.
This one was shorter.
Emily's voice was more urgent.
"Mom, if anything happens to me, please make sure Marcus sees these documents. I don't want him blaming himself. He wasn't home because he was working. Vanessa insisted she could help me with the medication.""
A long silence followed.
Then Emily whispered:
"I think she's lying.""
The recording stopped.
I covered my mouth.
For seven years, I had remembered the last phone call Emily made to me.
I had been at a hotel in Chicago, preparing for an important client presentation.
She told me she felt tired.
I told her I would be home the next evening.
She said she loved me.
I said it back.
That was the last time I heard her voice.
I had never imagined she might have been frightened.
Daniel closed the laptop.
"We need to obtain the complete medical records and have the medication information reviewed by an independent specialist.""
"Do you think Vanessa caused her death?""
"I think we have enough to justify a serious investigation. But we cannot draw conclusions from these documents alone.""
I nodded.
Then I opened the sealed envelope.
Inside was a letter.
Marcus,
If you're reading this, I hope you and Maya are safe.
I don't know whether I'm being paranoid, but Vanessa has become increasingly interested in my medication, insurance, and financial documents.
She says she's trying to help. Sometimes I believe her. Other times, I find things moved, papers missing, or pills that don't look familiar.
I don't want you to hate anyone because of me. I only want you to protect Maya.
There's one thing I haven't told you.
Vanessa was not the person who first introduced herself to me.
I stopped.
Daniel looked up.
"What does that mean?""
I continued reading.
She approached me through someone we both knew. She claimed she had information about an investment opportunity that could help our family.
I later discovered that the opportunity was connected to a financial company your father once investigated.
My heart skipped.
My father had died when I was twenty-six.
He had worked in corporate accounting and had spent the last years of his career investigating financial misconduct at a regional investment firm.
Emily's letter continued.
I think Vanessa knows something about your father's final investigation. She may have approached our family for reasons that have nothing to do with friendship.
At the bottom, Emily had written a name.
*Graham Whitmore.*
I stared at it.
Graham had been my father's former business partner.
He was also the man who had introduced Vanessa to my family.
I slowly lowered the letter.
Daniel was already searching the name on his laptop.
"Marcus, I need to ask you something.""
"What?""
"Does Graham Whitmore have any connection to Vanessa now?""
I thought about it.
Then I remembered something from the previous Christmas.
Graham had attended our family dinner.
Vanessa had introduced him as an old family friend.
He had spent almost the entire evening talking to Brielle.
I pulled out my phone and searched through the photographs.
There he was.
Standing beside Vanessa in our living room.
And in the background, Brielle was holding a document folder.
I zoomed in.
The folder had a logo.
*Whitmore Financial Group.*
Daniel looked at the photograph.
"That's interesting.""
My phone rang.
An unknown number.
I answered.
"Hello?""
A man's voice spoke.
"Marcus Carter?""
"Who is this?""
"My name is Graham Whitmore.""
I looked at Daniel.
Graham continued.
"I understand you've been looking through old family documents.""
I didn't respond.
He sighed.
"Listen carefully. Whatever Emily told your mother, you need to leave it alone.""
My blood went cold.
"How do you know what Emily told my mother?""
Silence.
Then he said:
"Because I was there when she discovered the truth.""
The call ended.
I stared at the phone.
Daniel slowly stood.
"Marcus, I think we've just discovered why Vanessa is so frightened.""
And before I could answer, another message appeared.
May you like
It was from Maya.
*Dad, Brielle came to Aunt Claire's house. She says she has something that belonged to Mom.*
