Chapter 3: The Money Grandma Left Behind

I didn't sleep that night.

At 2:17 a.m., I was sitting alone in my home office, staring at the bank receipt my mother had left inside Maya's wooden savings box.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

An account in my daughter's name.

And a woman who had apparently tried to get access to it.

I opened my laptop and searched through my old emails.

I found a message from my mother dated six months before she died.

The subject line read: *Maya's Future.*

Marcus,

I've completed the arrangements we discussed. The education fund is protected, and Maya will be able to access it when she reaches the appropriate age.

I've also included a separate provision in the trust. Please don't sign anything relating to this account without reading it carefully.

I frowned.

I remembered signing paperwork at the hospital during one of my mother's final visits.

But I couldn't remember the details.

At the bottom of the email was the name of her attorney.

Daniel Brooks.

I picked up my phone and called him.

He answered on the fourth ring.

"Marcus? It's two in the morning. Is everything okay?""

"No, Daniel. I need to ask you something about my mother's estate.""

His voice immediately became serious.

"Is this about Maya's trust?""

I sat straighter.

"Yes. I found a bank receipt showing twenty-five thousand dollars in her name.""

There was a pause.

"Where did you find that?""

"In her room.""

"Then we need to speak in person.""

"Why?""

"Because your mother established more than an education account.""

I gripped the phone.

"What else did she establish?""

Daniel hesitated.

"Marcus, I can't discuss the details until I verify your identity and review the documents. But I can tell you one thing. Your mother was very specific about protecting Maya's inheritance.""

"From whom?""

Another pause.

"Anyone who might attempt to access it without Maya's legal guardian's authorization.""

I looked through the glass wall toward the dark hallway.

"Daniel, did Vanessa ever contact you?""

Silence.

Then Daniel said, "Yes.""

My stomach tightened.

"When?""

"About three months ago.""

"What did she want?""

"Information about Maya's trust.""

I closed my eyes.

"What did you tell her?""

"That she had no authority to make decisions about the account.""

I exhaled slowly.

"Did she try again?""

"Twice.""

I stood.

"Daniel, I want every document my mother signed. Tomorrow morning.""

"Come to my office at nine.""

Before hanging up, he added something.

"Marcus, there's another matter. Your mother left a letter specifically for you. She instructed me not to release it unless you came to me personally.""

"What does it say?""

"I think you should read it yourself.""

The next morning, I made breakfast for Maya.

I scrambled eggs, toasted bread, and cut strawberries into small pieces because she liked them that way.

When I carried the plate into the guest room, she was sitting on the bed with her stuffed rabbit.

"Good morning, princess.""

She looked at the food.

"Is that for me?""

"Who else?""

She smiled faintly.

I sat beside her.

"After breakfast, I'm taking you somewhere.""

"Where?""

"To see Grandma's lawyer.""

Her expression changed.

"Am I in trouble?""

"No, sweetheart. We're trying to make sure nobody takes anything that belongs to you.""

She thought about that.

Then she asked, "Can I bring Mr. Buttons?""

I smiled.

"Of course.""

Mr. Buttons was the stuffed rabbit she had owned since she was four. One ear was nearly detached, and its white fur had turned gray from years of being carried everywhere.

At nine, I dropped Maya at my sister Claire's house.

Claire lived fifteen minutes away and had always been close to Maya.

When she opened the door, she took one look at the suitcase in my hand.

"Marcus, what's going on?""

I glanced at Maya.

"Can she stay with you for a few days?""

Claire immediately crouched and hugged her niece.

"Of course, sweetheart. You can have the pink room.""

Maya looked uncertain.

"Can I really sleep in a bed?""

Claire's smile vanished.

She looked up at me.

I nodded.

"Later," I whispered.

After Maya went inside, Claire grabbed my arm.

"What happened?""

I showed her a photograph of the rules.

She read them silently.

Then she looked at me with tears in her eyes.

"How long has she been living like this?""

"Twelve days that I know of.""

Claire covered her mouth.

"Marcus, she is a baby.""

"I know.""

"Then what are you waiting for?""

"I'm trying to understand everything before I make a decision.""

Claire shook her head.

"Your daughter doesn't need you to understand why someone hurt her. She needs you to make sure it stops.""

Her words stayed with me all the way to Daniel's office.

The attorney was waiting when I arrived.

He placed a thick folder on his desk.

"Your mother was remarkably thorough," he said.

I opened it.

The first document established Maya's education trust.

The second appointed me as trustee.

The third restricted withdrawals until Maya turned eighteen, except for approved educational or medical expenses.

I looked up.

"Can Vanessa access this?""

"No.""

"Could she become a trustee?""

"Not without a court order and a very compelling reason.""

Daniel turned another page.

"Your mother also created a separate investment account. It currently contains considerably more than the original twenty-five thousand dollars.""

"How much?""

He gave me the statement.

I stared at the number.

$184,600.

My mother had quietly invested the money for years.

I felt a wave of emotion.

She had been thinking about Maya's future even when she knew she wouldn't be around to see it.

Then Daniel handed me a printed email.

"This is from Vanessa.""

I read it.

Mr. Brooks,

I'm Maya's stepmother and part of her immediate family. Marcus is frequently away for work, so I should be allowed to manage the funds for household expenses.

Please send the account information and any required authorization forms.

Daniel pointed to the reply.

You have no legal authority over this trust. All requests must be submitted by the appointed trustee.

I looked at him.

"Did she ask again?""

Daniel slid another document across the desk.

It was a request for a change of beneficiary information.

My wife's name appeared in the section labeled proposed custodian.

It had been rejected.

"Who submitted this?""

"Vanessa.""

"When?""

"Three months ago.""

I leaned back.

"Did she forge my signature?""

Daniel shook his head.

"Not on this document. But she attached another authorization that appeared to carry your signature.""

He opened a second folder.

I stared at the page.

It was a photocopy of my name.

The signature looked almost identical to mine.

But I hadn't signed it.

I felt the room become smaller.

"Who gave you this?""

"Vanessa.""

"Did you report it?""

"At the time, we had no evidence that it was fraudulent. I refused the request and retained a copy.""

I photographed the document.

Then my phone vibrated.

A message from Claire.

Marcus, call me immediately.

I stepped into the hallway.

"What's wrong?""

Claire's voice was tense.

"Vanessa just called Maya.""

My heart dropped.

"What did she say?""

"She demanded to know where she was. Maya started crying, so I took the phone.""

"What happened?""

"Vanessa told me I had no right to interfere with her family.""

I closed my eyes.

"Claire, keep Maya with you. Don't let anyone take her anywhere.""

"Marcus, there's something else.""

"What?""

Claire lowered her voice.

"Vanessa said she's coming to get Maya this afternoon.""

I looked at the documents in my hand.

"She can't.""

"She says she has a signed paper from you giving her temporary custody.""

My blood ran cold.

"That's impossible.""

"Marcus, she sent me a photograph.""

I heard Claire tapping her phone.

A moment later, the image appeared on my screen.

It was a document with my name at the bottom.

A temporary guardianship authorization.

The signature looked exactly like mine.

Except I had never seen the document before.

And beneath my forged signature was a date.

The date was two days before I had left on my business trip.

I stared at it.

Then I noticed the witness signature.

*Brielle Thompson.*

My stepdaughter hadn't simply known what was happening.

She had apparently helped arrange it.

I called Daniel back.

"Someone has forged a custody document in my name.""

His voice turned sharp.

"Do not confront them yet. Send me the photograph.""

I forwarded it.

Then he said something that changed everything.

"Marcus, there's a problem. If this document was submitted to the court, we need to act immediately.""

"Was it?""

"I don't know yet.""

My phone vibrated again.

This time, it was an email notification from the county family court.

The subject line read:

*NOTICE OF EMERGENCY CUSTODY PETITION.*

I opened it.

The petitioner was Vanessa Thompson.

The requested order concerned my daughter.

And the reason listed beneath her name was:

*Father's alleged inability to provide a stable home environment for the minor child.*

I read the sentence twice.

Then I saw the attached statement.

It contained a claim that made my hands go numb.

According to Vanessa, Maya had been sleeping in the kitchen because I had ordered her to.

And she had submitted Brielle's signed statement as proof.

I looked at the screen, unable to breathe.

My wife hadn't merely taken my daughter's bedroom.

May you like

She was trying to make the world believe I was the one hurting her.

And the emergency hearing was scheduled for the following morning.
