Chapter 2 - The Money She Stole From My ChildrenThe envelope sat on the table.

Nobody touched it.

Nobody spoke.

Because everyone knew.

Whatever was inside…

Was something Vanessa never wanted me to find.

I looked at my wife.

Nine years of marriage.

Nine years of believing I knew her.

And suddenly…

I felt like I was standing in a stranger’s house.

“Who is this addressed to?”

Vanessa didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.”

She looked at me.

“It’s not what you think.”

That was the sentence people said when it was exactly what you thought.

I opened the envelope.

Inside were bank documents.

Transfer records.

Account numbers.

And one name.

A man named Ethan Cole.

I had never heard of him.

But Vanessa had sent him money.

A lot of money.

My attorney stayed on the phone.

“Ryan, are you seeing the documents?”

“Yes.”

His voice lowered.

“The children’s trust was created by your father.”

I nodded.

“I know.”

“That money was legally protected.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“Then how did she access it?”

Silence.

My attorney answered:

“She forged your authorization.”

My stomach dropped.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Ryan, listen.”

I raised my hand.

“No.”

My children were still behind me.

Still afraid.

And that was all I could think about.

The police arrived twenty minutes later.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I needed protection.

For my children.

The officers reviewed the security footage.

The hallway camera.

The laundry room.

Everything.

Vanessa watched silently.

The woman who always controlled every situation…

Had nothing to say.

But then something unexpected happened.

Emma walked toward me.

She held a small stuffed rabbit.

“Daddy.”

I knelt.

“Yes, sweetheart?”

She looked at Vanessa.

Then whispered:

“Is she leaving?”

My heart broke.

Because a five-year-old child should not have to ask that question.

I hugged her.

“I don’t know yet.”

Later that night, after Vanessa was taken away for questioning…

I sat in Caleb’s room.

He was awake.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are you mad at me?”

I froze.

“Why would I be mad at you?”

“Because I recorded her.”

I looked at my son.

The fact that he was worried about getting in trouble…

Destroyed me.

I held his hand.

“You protected your sister.”

A pause.

“You did the right thing.”

He looked relieved.

Then he said:

“I tried telling you before.”

My heart sank.

“What?”

He looked down.

“But Mom always said you would choose her.”

That sentence stayed with me.

Because Vanessa didn’t just hurt my children.

She made them believe they had no voice.

The next morning, my attorney arrived.

He placed a folder on the table.

“Ryan.”

“What is it?”

“More evidence.”

Inside were years of financial records.

Vanessa had been moving money for months.

But there was something strange.

“She wasn’t spending it.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“She was sending it somewhere.”

“Where?”

My attorney looked at me.

“To a company called Bright Horizon Holdings.”

I searched my memory.

I knew that company.

Because it belonged to someone connected to my past.

Someone I thought was gone.

My ex-wife’s brother.

I looked at the documents again.

Then another name appeared.

The account holder.

Ethan Cole.

The same man who received the money.

My attorney looked serious.

“Ryan.”

“What?”

“He is not just anyone.”

A pause.

“He was convicted of fraud five years ago.”

My blood ran cold.

Vanessa wasn’t just stealing.

She was working with someone.

Someone dangerous.

That evening, I returned home with Caleb and Emma.

The house felt different.

The place that once felt warm…

Felt empty.

Caleb held my hand.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Are we safe now?”

I looked at my children.

And I promised something.

“Yes.”

This time…

I would make sure.

But before I could even close the door…

Someone was waiting outside.

A black car.

A man standing beside it.

Ethan Cole.

He smiled.

“Ryan Mitchell.”

I stepped forward.

“Stay away from my family.”

He laughed.

“You have no idea what your wife and I were planning.”

My face hardened.

“What plan?”

He leaned closer.

“The plan to take everything.”

May you like

Then he looked toward the house.

“And your children were the only thing standing in the way.”
