Chapter 8 - The Secret My Father BuriedI didn’t sleep that night.

Because the question kept repeating.

Why was Vanessa in a photograph with my father?

And why did he never tell me?

I drove to his house early the next morning.

He opened the door and immediately knew.

Something was wrong.

“Ryan.”

I held up the photograph.

His expression changed.

That was all I needed to see.

“You know her.”

He looked away.

“Yes.”

My chest tightened.

“How?”

He sighed.

“Because I made a mistake.”

My father explained.

Years before Vanessa met me…

She worked for his company.

She was ambitious.

Smart.

Charming.

But she also had another side.

She knew how to manipulate people.

My father discovered she had been stealing company information.

He confronted her.

And instead of reporting her…

He made a deal.

He let her leave quietly.

A mistake.

One that came back years later.

“So she married me because of you?”

My father looked guilty.

“Not at first.”

A pause.

“But once she discovered who you were…”

He stopped.

I understood.

My family’s money.

My company.

The children’s trust.

Everything.

Vanessa saw opportunity.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

My father looked broken.

“Because I thought I could fix it.”

I shook my head.

“You always do that.”

“What?”

“Try to protect everyone by hiding the truth.”

He lowered his eyes.

And he knew I was right.

That afternoon, we discovered something else.

Vanessa had not acted alone.

The money transfers.

The fake documents.

The plan.

Someone helped her.

Someone with access.

Someone inside my company.

The investigation led to one name.

My uncle.

The man my father trusted.

The man who had worked beside him for twenty years.

I stared at the documents.

“No.”

My father looked devastated.

“I should have seen it.”

That evening, my uncle arrived.

He didn’t deny anything.

That shocked me.

He simply sat down.

“I knew this day would come.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

He smiled sadly.

“Because your father gave everything to you.”

Silence.

“You were always the favorite.”

I frowned.

“That’s what this was about?”

He laughed.

“You have no idea how much people hate feeling invisible.”

Then he revealed the final part of the plan.

Vanessa wasn’t chosen randomly.

She was chosen because she could get close to me.

Because she could become family.

Because family was the easiest place to hide a betrayal.

Before leaving, my uncle said one thing.

“You still don’t know who started this.”

I stared.

“What?”

He smiled.

“Vanessa was just a piece.”

A pause.

“The real player has been watching your family for years.”
