Chapter 9 - The Person Behind EverythingThe next morning, my attorney found the name.

The person who funded everything.

The person who connected Vanessa and Ethan.

The person who had been moving pieces from the beginning.

I looked at the document.

And felt my entire body go cold.

Because I knew the name.

It was someone I trusted.

Someone my children trusted.

Someone who had been inside our home.

Daniel Mitchell.

My own older brother.

I couldn’t believe it.

My brother.

The person who stood beside me at my wedding.

The person who held Caleb when he was born.

The person Emma called “Uncle Danny.”

The person I never questioned.

When I confronted him…

He didn’t run.

He didn’t deny it.

He just looked tired.

“I knew you would find out eventually.”

I stared.

“Why?”

His answer was simple.

“Because I was tired of being second.”

He explained.

Growing up, he always believed my father chose me.

The company.

The attention.

The future.

Everything went to me.

And resentment slowly became hatred.

Then Vanessa appeared.

She had the same anger.

The same desire.

Together, they created a plan.

“But my children?”

His expression changed.

“I never wanted them hurt.”

I shook my head.

“You put them in danger.”

He looked down.

“I know.”

The police arrived.

The final arrest was made.

The last person behind the plan was finally exposed.

But before he was taken away…

My brother looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

For the first time…

He sounded like my brother again.

Not my enemy.

That night, I sat beside Caleb.

He looked at me.

“Is everything over?”

I smiled softly.

“Yes.”

He thought for a moment.

“Really?”

I nodded.

“Really.”

Then he asked:

“Will people always leave?”

That question broke me.

I hugged him.

“No.”

A pause.

May you like

“Some people leave.”

“But some people stay forever.”
