Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN WHO HID BEHIND A PERFECT SMILERichard Sterling had spent his entire adult life learning how to find the truth.

In business, a mistake could cost millions.

A wrong investment.

A dishonest partner.

A hidden contract.

One small detail could destroy everything.

But somehow…

The biggest mistake of his life was not made in a boardroom.

It was made inside his own home.

He trusted the wrong person.

And the person who suffered because of it was the one person he promised to protect.

His daughter.

Sophie.

After midnight, Richard was still sitting in his office.

The mansion was silent.

Too silent.

Usually, silence meant peace.

Tonight, it felt like guilt.

He replayed every moment from the last two years.

Every time Sophie became quiet when Vanessa entered the room.

Every time she stopped asking Vanessa to play.

Every time she suddenly apologized for things that weren’t her fault.

“I’m sorry, Daddy.”

The words haunted him.

Because children apologized when they believed they were the problem.

Richard opened the security system again.

He had already checked the missing footage.

But now he was looking for something else.

Patterns.

Something Vanessa didn’t want him to see.

The security company told him the recordings had been manually erased.

Not accidentally.

Not because of a technical problem.

Someone had entered the system.

Someone with access.

Richard leaned back.

Only three people had access to the home security network.

Him.

His assistant.

And Vanessa.

His phone rang.

It was his assistant, Michael.

“Mr. Sterling?”

“Michael, I need a favor.”

“Of course.”

“I need a complete background check on Vanessa Moore.”

There was a pause.

Michael had worked for Richard for ten years.

He knew exactly what those words meant.

“You mean… everything?”

“Everything.”

“Personal history?”

“Everything.”

Richard looked toward Sophie’s bedroom.

“And I need it tonight.”

The next morning, Richard woke up before sunrise.

He quietly entered Sophie’s room.

She was still asleep.

Her stuffed rabbit was beside her.

The same rabbit she had carried everywhere since she was three.

Richard sat on the edge of the bed.

He gently moved her hair away from her face.

And then he noticed something.

A small bruise on her wrist.

His heart stopped.

He carefully touched her arm.

Sophie woke up.

“Daddy?”

Richard immediately softened.

“Hey, princess.”

She rubbed her eyes.

“Did I sleep too long?”

“No.”

He smiled sadly.

“You’re perfect.”

She looked confused.

“Why are you looking sad?”

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

Because the truth was painful.

He had been so focused on building a company…

That he forgot the most important thing he was supposed to protect.

“You know you can tell me anything, right?”

Sophie looked down.

“Yes.”

“Anything.”

She was quiet.

Then she whispered:

“Will Vanessa be mad?”

Richard felt his chest tighten.

“No.”

He held her hand.

“She will never hurt you again.”

Sophie looked at him.

“Promise?”

Richard didn’t hesitate.

“I promise.”

At breakfast, Vanessa appeared completely normal.

That almost made Richard angrier.

She walked into the kitchen wearing an expensive dress.

Smiling.

Acting like nothing happened.

“Good morning.”

Richard watched her carefully.

“Morning.”

She kissed his cheek.

But he didn’t move.

She noticed.

“What’s wrong?”

Richard looked at Sophie.

“She’s not going to school today.”

Vanessa frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I want to spend time with her.”

A small flash of irritation crossed Vanessa’s face.

Just for a second.

But Richard saw it.

“Of course.”

She smiled.

“I think that’s wonderful.”

Richard studied her.

The smile.

The voice.

The perfect image.

It was all carefully controlled.

“Vanessa.”

“Yes?”

“How long have you been deleting security footage?”

The smile disappeared.

Only for a moment.

But it disappeared.

“What?”

Richard placed his phone on the table.

A report was displayed.

“You heard me.”

Vanessa became defensive.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“That’s interesting.”

He leaned forward.

“Because the system shows someone accessed the cameras from your account.”

Her face changed.

“Richard, are you accusing me?”

“I’m asking questions.”

“No.”

She stood.

“You’re attacking me.”

Sophie became nervous.

Richard noticed immediately.

And that told him more than Vanessa’s words.

Because Sophie was afraid of conflict.

And children only become afraid when they learn conflict is dangerous.

“I’m not attacking you.”

Richard stood.

“I’m protecting my daughter.”

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“You’re choosing her over me?”

Richard stared at her.

The answer was obvious.

“Always.”

For the first time…

Vanessa looked like she understood.

She wasn’t competing with another woman.

She wasn’t competing with his career.

She was competing with the one person Richard would never abandon.

His daughter.

That afternoon, Michael arrived with the report.

Richard opened it in his office.

The first page was normal.

Education.

Employment.

Previous addresses.

Nothing unusual.

Then he reached the financial section.

And stopped.

Vanessa had debts.

Large debts.

Hidden debts.

Almost two million dollars.

Richard frowned.

That didn’t make sense.

Vanessa lived comfortably.

She bought expensive clothes.

Went on luxury vacations.

Someone was paying.

He continued reading.

Then he saw the name.

The person transferring money to Vanessa.

Jonathan Cross.

Richard knew that name.

Everyone in the business world knew it.

Jonathan Cross was a rival investor.

A man who had tried to buy Sterling Global Holdings three years earlier.

A man who hated Richard.

Richard looked at the documents again.

His fiancée was secretly receiving money from his biggest competitor.

And suddenly…

The dog bowl wasn’t just about cruelty.

The pantry wasn’t just about punishment.

Something much darker was happening.

His phone buzzed.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

“Ask Vanessa why she needs your daughter gone before the wedding.”

Richard froze.

His fingers tightened around the phone.

Gone.

Not disciplined.

Not controlled.

Gone.

He looked through the window toward the garden.

Sophie was outside drawing with chalk.

Completely unaware.

And for the first time…

Richard wondered if Vanessa had ever wanted to become part of their family.

Or if she had only wanted what came with his name.

His money.

His company.

His inheritance.

That night, Richard made a decision.

The wedding was no longer happening.

But before he confronted Vanessa…

He needed proof.

Because if she was willing to hurt a six-year-old child…

Richard knew she would do anything to protect herself.

Including lie.

Including manipulate.

Including destroy anyone who stood in her way.

And Richard was about to discover the biggest secret Vanessa had been hiding.

A secret involving Sophie’s late mother.

A secret that would change everything.
