Chapter 6 - THE HOUSE WHERE THE TRUTH WAS BURIEDThe old Sterling estate had been empty for almost three years.

After Emma died, Richard couldn’t stay there.
Every room carried memories.
The kitchen where Emma used to dance while making breakfast.
The hallway where Sophie took her first steps.
The garden where Emma would sit for hours watching their daughter play.
Leaving wasn’t because Richard stopped loving the house.
It was because he loved it too much.
Every corner reminded him of what he lost.
But now…
He had to return.
Because Emma had hidden something there.
Something she believed Sophie would need one day.
Richard arrived at the estate with Sophie beside him.
He had considered leaving her with a nanny.
But then he remembered something important.
Sophie was not a fragile thing that needed to be hidden from every difficult moment.
She was his daughter.
And she deserved to know she was strong.
“Daddy?”
Richard looked down.
“Yes, princess?”
“Why are we here?”
He smiled gently.
“Because your mommy left something for you.”
Sophie’s eyes widened.
“For me?”
“Yes.”
A small smile appeared on her face.
The first real happiness he had seen from her in days.
The house looked exactly the same.
Dust covered the furniture.
The walls were quiet.
But Richard could almost hear Emma’s voice.
“Don’t forget to buy strawberries.”
“Richard, you’re working too much.”
“You need to spend more time with Sophie.”
The memories hurt.
But this time…
They also gave him strength.
They searched for hours.
Nothing.
No hidden box.
No documents.
No clue.
Then Sophie walked into the old nursery.
“Daddy?”
Richard followed.
“What is it?”
She pointed toward the bookshelf.
“Mommy used to hide my drawings there.”
Richard walked closer.
Behind the bookshelf was a small space.
His heart started racing.
He moved the shelf.
Behind it was a small wooden box.
Inside was a letter.
And a key.
The letter had only one sentence.
“For Richard, when you finally understand.”
His hands shook as he opened it.
Emma’s handwriting.
Richard,
If you found this, then you finally realized that love does not mean trusting everyone who says they love you.
He stopped.
Because Emma knew.
She knew someone would try to manipulate him.
I need you to know something about Vanessa.
Richard froze.
Vanessa.
His wife had known her?
Impossible.
The letter continued.
She came to me before she came to you.
Richard felt his stomach drop.
Before him?
She told me she wanted to help our family. She told me she admired me.
A pause.
But I discovered the truth.
Richard gripped the paper.
She was searching for Sophie’s inheritance.
Everything suddenly connected.
Emma had discovered Vanessa before Richard ever met her.
But why didn’t she tell him?
The answer was in the next sentence.
Because I was afraid.
Richard stopped.
Emma was never afraid.
Never.
Vanessa knew about my health problems. She knew I didn’t have much time.
His breathing became heavier.
She threatened me.
Richard closed his eyes.
The pain he felt was overwhelming.
Emma had been fighting alone.
And he never knew.
She told me if I exposed her, she would make sure Sophie lost everything.
The final sentence was written differently.
As if Emma had rushed.
Richard, I need you to protect our daughter from people who see her as a possession instead of a child.
Richard folded the letter.
His eyes filled with tears.
Because Emma’s final battle…
Was protecting Sophie.
And now he had to finish it.
That evening, Richard returned home.
But Vanessa was waiting.
She was sitting in the living room.
Not smiling.
Not pretending anymore.
“You found it.”
Richard stopped.
“How?”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Because Emma always thought she was smarter than everyone else.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Don’t talk about my wife.”
Vanessa laughed.
“She was obsessed with protecting Sophie.”
“She was a mother.”
“So am I.”
Richard stared at her.
“No.”
The word was quiet.
But powerful.
“You wanted her money.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
“I wanted security.”
“You wanted thirty million dollars.”
She looked away.
“You have no idea what it feels like to struggle.”
Richard almost couldn’t believe it.
“You hurt a child because you wanted money?”
“I never hurt her.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You locked her in a pantry.”
Silence.
“You forced her to eat from a dog bowl.”
Silence.
“You made her believe I would stop loving her.”
Vanessa finally looked at him.
And the truth came out.
“I needed her to stop fighting me.”
Richard felt sick.
“She’s six.”
“She was smarter than you think.”
Those words were the final proof.
Vanessa didn’t see Sophie as a child.
She saw her as an obstacle.
Richard took out his phone.
“I recorded everything.”
Vanessa froze.
“What?”
“You admitted it.”
Her face went pale.
For the first time…
She understood.
The game was over.
But before Richard could leave…
Someone knocked on the door.
Police.
Behind them was Jonathan Cross.
Handcuffed.
Richard looked confused.
“What happened?”
The officer stepped forward.
“Mr. Sterling, we need to speak with you.”
“About what?”
The officer looked at Vanessa.
“She wasn’t working alone.”
Richard’s heart sank.
“What?”
The officer handed him a document.
“We found evidence connecting Vanessa Moore and Jonathan Cross to a larger financial scheme.”
Richard looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
Not because she was caught.
Because she knew something worse was coming.
The officer continued:
“There’s another person involved.”
Richard frowned.
“Who?”
The officer hesitated.
May you like
Then said:
“Someone inside your company.”
