Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH ABOUT SOPHIE’S MOTHERRichard Sterling had spent years negotiating with powerful people.

CEOs.

Politicians.

Investors.

Men and women who smiled while planning their next move.

He knew how to read people.

Or at least…

He thought he did.

But Vanessa Moore had fooled him completely.

The hardest part wasn’t discovering that she lied.

The hardest part was realizing how long she had been lying.

Richard sat alone in his office, staring at the old letter from Emma.

His wife’s final warning.

A warning he never received.

A warning that might have saved Sophie.

He read the final paragraph again.

“Please don’t let Sophie grow up believing she is difficult to love.”

Those words stayed in his mind.

Because suddenly, everything made sense.

The quietness.

The fear.

The apologies.

The way Sophie looked at Vanessa.

A child who feels loved runs toward people.

A child who feels afraid tries to disappear.

Richard closed his eyes.

He had failed to notice.

Not because he didn’t love his daughter.

But because he trusted the wrong person.

His phone rang.

Michael.

“Mr. Sterling?”

“Yes.”

“We found something else about Vanessa.”

Richard sat up.

“What?”

“There was another name connected to her.”

“Who?”

Michael hesitated.

“Emma Sterling.”

Richard froze.

“What?”

“She searched your wife’s records six months before she met you.”

The room became silent.

“Why?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Richard stood.

“Find out.”

“I’m already working on it.”

Richard ended the call.

Then he looked toward the family photo on his desk.

Emma.

Sophie.

Him.

A picture taken before everything changed.

Before Vanessa.

Before the lies.

Before his daughter became afraid inside her own home.

That evening, Richard came home early.

Sophie was sitting on the living room floor drawing.

She immediately looked up.

“Daddy!”

For the first time in weeks…

She smiled.

A real smile.

Richard sat beside her.

“What are you drawing?”

She turned the paper around.

It was a picture of three people holding hands.

Richard.

Sophie.

And Emma.

His heart tightened.

“Beautiful.”

Sophie looked at the drawing.

“Mommy said families stay together even when someone is gone.”

Richard swallowed.

“Your mommy was right.”

Sophie became quiet.

Then she asked:

“Daddy?”

“Yes?”

“Did I do something bad?”

Richard felt like someone had punched him.

“No.”

He turned toward her.

“Never.”

“Then why was Vanessa mad at me?”

Richard took a deep breath.

Because children deserved honesty.

But not the kind of honesty that damaged them.

“Sometimes adults make wrong choices.”

“Like bad choices?”

“Yes.”

“Even grown-ups?”

“Especially grown-ups.”

Sophie thought for a moment.

Then whispered:

“I tried to be good.”

Richard pulled her into his arms.

“You never had to earn my love.”

She cried quietly.

“Then why did Vanessa say you would love me less if I was difficult?”

Richard froze.

Every muscle in his body tightened.

“What did she say?”

Sophie immediately looked scared.

“I’m sorry.”

“No.”

Richard held her face gently.

“Don’t apologize.”

“She said after the wedding, you would have less time for me because you would have a new family.”

Richard felt his heart break.

Because Vanessa wasn’t just hurting Sophie physically.

She was attacking the thing Sophie needed most.

Her sense of belonging.

The next morning, Richard met with a private investigator.

The man placed a folder on the table.

“Mr. Sterling, Vanessa Moore has been hiding more than financial problems.”

Richard opened the folder.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Messages.

The first page showed Vanessa meeting Jonathan Cross.

Repeatedly.

Secret meetings.

Private locations.

Then came something worse.

A message exchange.

Jonathan:

“Once the marriage happens, Sterling’s assets will become easier to access.”

Vanessa:

“I know. I just need the daughter under control.”

Richard stopped reading.

His hands became cold.

The investigator continued.

“There’s more.”

Richard looked up.

“She was not interested in becoming Sophie’s mother.”

A pause.

“She was interested in replacing Emma.”

Richard looked confused.

“What?”

The investigator placed another document down.

Vanessa had researched Emma’s life.

Her friendships.

Her habits.

Her medical records.

Everything.

“She studied your late wife.”

Richard stared at the pages.

“Why?”

The investigator lowered his voice.

“Because Vanessa believed Emma had something she wanted.”

“What?”

“A hidden trust fund.”

Richard frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“We thought so too.”

The investigator opened another file.

“But your wife created a private account for Sophie.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“A trust?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

The investigator looked at him.

“Thirty million dollars.”

Richard went silent.

Thirty million dollars.

Money Emma had left for Sophie’s future.

Money nobody knew about.

Except apparently…

Vanessa.

That night, Richard returned home and found Vanessa waiting.

She was sitting in the living room.

Calm.

Almost peaceful.

“I know you found out.”

Richard stopped.

“You know?”

She smiled slightly.

“You always were good at investigating business problems.”

She stood.

“But you never investigated the people closest to you.”

Richard looked at her.

“You used my daughter.”

Vanessa’s expression changed.

“She was in the way.”

Those words.

Those four words.

Destroyed the last piece of doubt Richard had.

“She is a child.”

“She is an obstacle.”

Richard stared at her.

And Vanessa finally revealed who she truly was.

“You don’t understand, Richard.”

“I understand perfectly.”

“No.”

She stepped closer.

“You built everything because you wanted power.”

Richard shook his head.

“I built everything to protect my family.”

She laughed.

“And that’s why you’re weak.”

Richard looked at her.

“No.”

His voice was calm.

“That’s why you lost.”

Vanessa frowned.

“What?”

“Because you thought my money was my greatest strength.”

He looked toward Sophie’s room.

“It was never the money.”

A pause.

“It was her.”

For the first time…

Vanessa looked afraid.

Because she realized Richard Sterling was no longer the man she could manipulate.

He was a father who knew the truth.

And fathers like that were dangerous.

The next morning, Richard made a decision.

Vanessa was leaving.

But before he could confront her officially…

His lawyer called.

“Mr. Sterling, we found something important.”

“What?”

“The trust fund documents.”

Richard waited.

“The original beneficiary agreement has been changed.”

His stomach dropped.

“Changed by who?”

The lawyer paused.

Then answered:

“Your wife.”

Richard frowned.

“That’s impossible.”

“Mr. Sterling…”

The lawyer’s voice became serious.

“The signature is Emma Sterling’s.”

Richard looked toward the window.

Because suddenly, everything became more complicated.

Emma had created the trust.

Emma had changed something.

And Vanessa somehow knew about it.

Which meant there was another secret.

May you like

A secret even Richard didn’t know.

And the answer was hidden somewhere in Emma’s past.
