Chapter 8 - THE TRUTH ABOUT EMMA’S LAST DAYSRichard stared at the photograph for nearly five minutes.

He didn’t move.
He didn’t blink.
Because sometimes a single image could destroy years of memories.
And this was one of those moments.
The picture showed Emma standing beside his father, William Sterling.
His father.
The man Richard had admired his entire life.
The man who taught him business.
The man who taught him discipline.
The man who always said:
“Family is the only thing money cannot buy.”
But now Richard wondered…
Was that the truth?
Or just another carefully crafted lie?
The photograph had been taken six months before Emma died.
Six months.
Richard’s mind immediately went back.
Emma’s behavior during that time.
The late-night phone calls.
The nervous conversations she would stop whenever he entered the room.
The way she always looked toward the door.
At the time, he thought she was stressed because of her health.
He thought she was afraid of leaving Sophie behind.
But now…
He wasn’t sure anymore.
Richard called the number that sent the photo.
No answer.
He tried again.
Nothing.
Then a message arrived.
“If you want the truth, come alone.”
A location appeared.
An abandoned office building outside the city.
Richard stared at the message.
Every instinct told him it was dangerous.
But he had spent too long believing everything people told him.
Not anymore.
The building was empty.
Old.
Forgotten.
Richard entered slowly.
“Hello?”
A voice answered.
“You look exactly like your father.”
Richard stopped.
An older man stepped out from the shadows.
Richard recognized him immediately.
“Thomas?”
Thomas was his father’s former lawyer.
The man who disappeared after William Sterling’s death.
“What are you doing here?”
Thomas looked tired.
“Trying to finish something I should have finished years ago.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
“You sent the photo.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Thomas looked at him.
“Because Emma trusted me.”
Richard felt his chest tighten.
“My wife knew you?”
“She came to me before she died.”
Richard stepped closer.
“What did she say?”
Thomas looked away.
“She was afraid.”
Richard’s hands tightened.
“Afraid of Vanessa?”
“No.”
A pause.
“Afraid of your family.”
Those words hit harder than expected.
“My family?”
Thomas nodded.
“Your father built an empire.”
“I know.”
“But he also built enemies.”
Richard frowned.
“My father wasn’t a criminal.”
Thomas sighed.
“That’s what everyone wanted you to believe.”
Richard felt anger rising.
“Explain.”
Thomas opened an old briefcase.
Inside were files.
Hundreds of pages.
“Your father discovered that someone inside Sterling Global was stealing money.”
Richard looked at the documents.
“Who?”
Thomas looked at him.
“Your grandfather.”
Richard froze.
“What?”
“William Sterling wasn’t the first person to hide secrets.”
Thomas continued.
“Your grandfather created illegal accounts. Your father discovered them years later.”
Richard shook his head.
“That makes no sense.”
“It does when you understand your father’s choice.”
“What choice?”
“He could expose his own family…”
Thomas paused.
“Or protect the Sterling name.”
Richard looked at the papers.
“And Emma?”
“Emma wanted the truth exposed.”
Richard’s heart sank.
“Of course she did.”
“She believed Sophie deserved to grow up knowing honesty mattered more than reputation.”
Thomas handed him a file.
“This was the last thing she wrote.”
Richard opened it.
Inside was a letter.
Different from the others.
Shorter.
More desperate.
Richard,
I’m sorry I kept things from you.
I wanted to tell you everything.
But every time I tried, someone reminded me that Sophie could be hurt if I spoke.
Richard stopped reading.
His hands shook.
The next line broke him.
I was not afraid of losing money. I was afraid of losing our daughter.
Tears filled his eyes.
Because now he understood.
Emma wasn’t hiding secrets because she didn’t trust him.
She was trying to protect Sophie.
Just like he was trying to do now.
When Richard returned home, Sophie was waiting.
She ran toward him.
“Daddy!”
He picked her up.
Held her tightly.
For a moment, he forgot about Vanessa.
The company.
The secrets.
Everything.
There was only his daughter.
That night, Richard made a decision.
The Sterling family would no longer survive on lies.
He would expose everything.
Even if it destroyed the company.
Even if it destroyed his reputation.
Because Sophie mattered more.
The next morning, Richard called an emergency board meeting.
Everyone was there.
Including Andrew.
His cousin.
The man who betrayed him.
Andrew entered confidently.
“Richard, what is this about?”
Richard looked at him.
“You tell me.”
Andrew smiled.
“I have no idea.”
Richard placed a folder on the table.
“Two years of financial records.”
Andrew’s expression changed slightly.
“You’re accusing me?”
“I’m proving it.”
Silence filled the room.
Richard continued:
“You stole from this company.”
Andrew laughed.
“You don’t have proof.”
Richard pressed a button.
The screen behind him turned on.
Emails.
Transactions.
Messages.
Everything.
Andrew’s face went pale.
“You set me up.”
Richard shook his head.
“No.”
He looked around the room.
“You destroyed yourself.”
Then Andrew said something unexpected.
Something that changed everything.
“You think I’m the mastermind?”
Richard stopped.
Andrew laughed bitterly.
“You’re still blind.”
“What?”
Andrew looked at him.
“Vanessa wasn’t the beginning.”
Richard’s heart sank.
“Then who?”
Andrew looked directly at him.
“Your father.”
The room went silent.
Richard felt like the floor disappeared.
“My father?”
Andrew smiled.
“The man you worshipped created this entire mess.”
Richard refused to believe it.
“You’re lying.”
Andrew leaned back.
“Then ask yourself one question.”
“What?”
“Why did Emma leave evidence against everyone except William Sterling?”
Richard froze.
Because he didn’t know.
And suddenly…
The biggest question remained.
May you like
Was his father the victim?
Or was he the person who started everything?
