Chapter 10: My Daughter Was the Final Bargaining Chip

For three seconds, I couldn't understand what Danielle had just told me.

Then I grabbed her shoulders.

“What do you mean Ava took Ethan?””

Danielle winced.

“Marcus, please. You're hurting me.””

I immediately released her.

“Where is my daughter?””

“She wasn't taken by Richard. She went with someone she trusted.””

“Who?””

Danielle closed her eyes.

“Vanessa.””

The name hit me harder than anything else that day.

Vanessa had been at the police station. She had been questioned, photographed, and placed under investigation.

But somehow, she had disappeared.

I turned toward Robert.

“Call the station. Find Vanessa immediately.””

He was already speaking into his radio.

“Units, locate Vanessa Cole. Possible abduction involving a nine-year-old female and a young boy. Last known location, Blackwood Motel.””

I knelt beside Danielle.

“Tell me exactly what happened.””

She struggled to sit up.

“Vanessa contacted me two days ago. She said she wanted to make things right.””

“And you believed her?””

“I didn't know what else to do. She told me Richard was planning to move the children.””

“Which children?””

“All three.””

I stared at her.

Danielle nodded.

“She knew Daniel wanted Ethan and Oliver. But she also knew Richard was afraid of something your father had left behind. Something that could destroy the entire arrangement.””

“The trust agreement?””

“Yes.””

I looked toward the window.

Outside, officers were surrounding Richard's SUV.

My uncle stood beside the vehicle, calmly speaking to an officer as if he were discussing a parking ticket.

“How did Ava become involved?””

Danielle took a trembling breath.

“Vanessa told her that Mommy needed help. She promised to take her somewhere safe.””

I felt sick.

“She used my daughter?””

“She told Ava that if she helped find Ethan, she could bring her mother home.””

I pressed my hands against my face.

Ava had spent four years waiting for Danielle.

She would have believed anything that promised to bring her mother back.

“Where would Vanessa take her?””

Danielle looked at me.

“The old estate.””

Robert approached.

“We have a problem.””

I stood.

“What?””

“Richard claims he has no knowledge of Vanessa's location. His vehicle contains no children, and the property has already been cleared.””

I grabbed his arm.

“She's taken Ava to the estate.””

“We're checking.””

“Then check faster!””

Robert didn't react to my anger.

Instead, he handed me a tablet.

“We recovered this from Richard's vehicle.””

On the screen was a live security feed.

It showed the interior of a large underground room.

Ava sat on a chair.

Ethan was beside her.

And a little boy with dark hair sat in the corner.

Oliver.

All three children were alive.

But someone had locked the door from outside.

I moved closer to the screen.

“Ava!””

She couldn't hear me.

Then a man entered the room.

Daniel.

He carried a folder and placed it on the table.

He looked directly at the camera.

“Hello, Marcus.””

Robert immediately tried tracing the feed.

Daniel smiled.

“I know you're watching. I also know you have the original trust agreement.””

I looked at Danielle.

She shook her head.

“Don't give it to him.””

Daniel continued.

“Bring the agreement to the estate. Come alone. If you involve the police, I'll move the children somewhere you will never find them.””

The screen changed.

Ava looked up.

Her face was streaked with tears.

“Daddy!””

The recording froze.

I nearly dropped the tablet.

Robert caught it.

“Marcus, don't do anything stupid.””

I turned toward him.

“They have my daughter.””

“And we know where she is.””

“Then let's go!””

“We need a tactical team.””

I looked at Danielle.

She was trying to stand.

“Where is the original agreement?””

She reached into her coat and pulled out a small brass key.

“Your father's office.””

I recognized it immediately.

The old study at the family estate.

The one Richard had converted into a storage room after my father died.

Danielle pressed the key into my hand.

“There's a safe behind the portrait of your grandfather.””

“What does the agreement say?””

She looked at me.

“Your father discovered that Richard had been stealing from the family trust for years. Before he died, he changed the beneficiary arrangements.””

“To whom?””

“To the children. But he also included a protection clause.””

“What protection clause?””

She swallowed.

“If any guardian was found to have concealed a child's identity, falsified medical records, or used the children for financial gain, the entire trust would be transferred to an independent foundation.””

Robert leaned closer.

“Meaning Richard loses control of everything.””

Danielle nodded.

“And Daniel loses the money he stole.””

I looked at the security footage again.

My brother had built an empire on the assumption that nobody would ever discover what he had done.

But he had made one mistake.

He had believed I would always be too trusting to question my own family.

I turned toward Robert.

“Get your team ready.””

He nodded.

Then my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Daniel's voice came through.

“Marcus, I hope you're coming.””

“I'm coming.””

“Bring the agreement.””

“I want to speak to Ava.””

A pause.

Then I heard my daughter's voice.

“Daddy?””

My heart cracked.

“Sweetheart, are you hurt?””

“No.””

“Are you scared?””

“Yes.””

“Listen to me. Mommy is safe. I'm coming to get you.””

Daniel took the phone.

“Very touching.””

“Don't touch my daughter.””

He laughed.

“Then bring the papers.””

The call ended.

Robert looked at me.

“We'll enter from the east side. You stay behind us.””

I nodded.

But as we prepared to leave, Danielle grabbed my wrist.

“Marcus, there's something else.””

“What?””

She looked toward Richard.

“My father-in-law didn't create that trust to protect the children.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Danielle's eyes filled with tears.

“He created it because he knew one of them wasn't biologically related to you.””

The room went silent.

I looked at her.

“What?””

She swallowed.

“Oliver isn't your biological son.””

I stared at her.

“Then whose is he?””

Danielle shook her head.

“I don't know. But your father knew. That's why he included him in the trust.””

I felt the walls closing in.

Three children.

Four years of lies.

And another secret waiting to destroy whatever remained of my family.

Robert called my name.

“Marcus. We have to move.””

I looked at Danielle one last time.

“I'm bringing our children home.””

She caught my hand.

“Bring all of them.””

May you like

Then she whispered:

“And whatever happens, don't let Richard get his hands on Ava.””
