Chapter 11: The Last Safe in My Father's Office

The old family estate looked exactly as I remembered it.

Tall iron gates.

A circular driveway.

A fountain my father had imported from Italy.

And the enormous house where I had spent every Christmas of my childhood.

It was strange how a place could look so peaceful while hiding so much evil.

Robert's team surrounded the property before we entered.

Two officers positioned themselves near the garage. Another group moved toward the rear garden.

I carried the brass key Danielle had given me.

The original trust agreement was supposedly inside the safe in my father's study.

Daniel wanted it.

Richard wanted it.

And I needed to understand why my father had left it there.

Robert approached me.

“Stay close.””

We entered through the main doors.

The house smelled of polished wood and old furniture.

A grandfather clock chimed in the hallway.

I remembered running through this corridor as a boy, chasing Daniel while Richard shouted at us to stop.

My father used to sit in his study and watch us from the doorway.

He always said family was the only thing money couldn't replace.

I wondered whether he had believed those words.

Or whether he had simply known how to use them.

We reached the study.

The furniture had been rearranged.

The portrait of my grandfather still hung above the fireplace.

I moved it aside.

A small metal safe was built into the wall.

The brass key fit perfectly.

Inside lay a leather folder, several envelopes, and a small black notebook.

I opened the folder.

The first page contained the trust agreement.

My father's signature appeared at the bottom.

But the most important section was highlighted.

No individual guardian, family member, or trustee shall exercise authority over the beneficiaries for personal financial gain. Any breach of this provision shall immediately revoke all custodial authority and transfer control to the independent family protection board.

I read it twice.

Then I turned to the next page.

Three names were listed.

Ava Cole.

Ethan Cole.

Oliver Cole.

Each child had been assigned an equal share.

I frowned.

My father had known about Oliver.

But how?

I opened the black notebook.

The first entry was dated five years earlier.

Richard believes I am unaware of the hospital arrangements. He is mistaken.

The second entry was more disturbing.

Daniel has become reckless. He believes the money will make him untouchable.

The third entry made my hands shake.

Marcus must never discover the truth about Oliver until the children are safe.

I looked at Robert.

“There's something here.””

He read the entry.

“Keep going.””

I turned the page.

Oliver was born to a woman named Claire Bennett. She was involved with Daniel before he married his first wife. The child was placed under Richard's guardianship after Claire died.

I felt my stomach turn.

“Daniel's son.””

Robert nodded.

“So Oliver is Ethan's half-brother.””

I looked down at the notebook.

My father had known everything.

He had known that Daniel had another child, that Richard was raising him, and that Ethan had been taken from Danielle.

But why had he allowed it?

I turned another page.

The answer was there.

I was dying. Richard convinced me that separating the children would protect them from Daniel's influence. I agreed to a temporary arrangement. I did not know he intended to keep them permanently.

I sat down.

My father hadn't started the conspiracy.

But he had helped build it.

He had chosen silence.

And that silence had allowed my wife to suffer.

A knock sounded behind us.

Robert immediately reached for his weapon.

A woman entered.

Vanessa.

She was holding a small envelope.

“Where are the children?”” I demanded.

She looked at me.

“They're downstairs.””

I stepped forward.

“Take me to them.””

“Not yet.””

I stared at her.

“Don't test me.””

She placed the envelope on the desk.

“Daniel told me to give you this if you found the agreement.””

Robert opened it.

Inside was a photograph of three children standing beside Richard.

Ava.

Ethan.

Oliver.

On the back was a handwritten sentence.

One child belongs to the past. One belongs to the future. The third belongs to the man who controls them.

Robert frowned.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa looked at the trust agreement.

“Richard wants the board to recognize him as the children's legal guardian.””

“Why?””

“Because the trust is worth more than thirty million dollars.””

I stared at her.

“Thirty million?””

She nodded.

“Your father invested in property, medical patents, and several private companies. The children are the beneficiaries.””

Robert looked at the notebook.

“And Richard has been trying to gain control of the inheritance.””

Vanessa nodded.

“Daniel promised him half.””

I stepped toward her.

“Where is Ava?””

“Below the east wing.””

“Take me there.””

She hesitated.

“Marcus, you need to understand something. Daniel has a gun.””

Robert raised his weapon.

“Where?””

“In the old laboratory.””

I felt cold.

“The laboratory?””

Vanessa nodded.

“Your father used to conduct medical research there. Richard reopened it after the children were brought to the estate.””

Robert immediately radioed his team.

“We have a possible armed suspect in the east wing. Proceed with caution.””

Vanessa moved toward the hallway.

I followed.

We descended a narrow staircase behind the kitchen.

At the bottom was a corridor lined with white doors.

The air smelled of disinfectant.

A camera blinked above the final door.

Vanessa entered a code.

The lock clicked.

Inside was a large room filled with medical equipment.

And three small chairs.

Ava's white flower-girl ribbon lay on the floor.

I picked it up.

“Where is she?””

Vanessa pointed toward another door.

Before I could move, a voice came from behind us.

“Not so fast.””

Richard stood at the end of the corridor.

He held a pistol.

Robert immediately raised his weapon.

“Drop it!””

Richard smiled.

“Robert. Still following orders from people who don't understand the bigger picture?””

“Put the gun down.””

Richard looked at me.

“You found the agreement.””

I held up the folder.

“Why did you do this?””

He laughed softly.

“Because your father was a fool.””

“My father trusted you.””

“Your father was dying. He needed someone to protect his legacy.””

“You kidnapped my children!””

“I raised your son!””

“You stole him!””

Richard's expression hardened.

“Ethan was never going to have the life you could give him. He needed specialists. Money. Protection.””

“You told him his parents were dead.””

“Because the truth would have destroyed him.””

I stepped forward.

“You don't get to decide what my children know.””

Richard raised the pistol.

“Give me the agreement.””

Robert moved slightly.

Richard noticed.

“Don't.””

Then a small voice came from behind the door.

“Daddy?””

Ava.

I turned.

“Sweetheart!””

Richard smiled.

“Open the folder, Marcus. Sign the transfer documents. And your daughter walks out of here.””

I stared at the man who had once taught me how to throw a baseball.

Then I noticed something on the desk.

A small recording device.

Its red light was blinking.

I looked at Vanessa.

She gave the slightest nod.

The recording was live.

Robert understood immediately.

He lowered his weapon a fraction.

“Richard, you are admitting to illegally holding three children?””

Richard laughed.

“I am admitting nothing.””

Then he looked at me.

“But I will admit one thing.””

He stepped closer.

“Your father never intended for you to raise those children.””

I felt my jaw tighten.

“Why?””

Richard smiled.

“Because one of them carries a secret that could destroy the Cole family.””

Before I could ask what he meant, a loud crash echoed from the room behind him.

The lights went out.

Someone screamed.

And when the emergency lights came on, Richard was gone.

So was the trust agreement.

But the recording device remained on the desk.

And Robert's face had turned pale.

“Marcus,” he whispered.

“What?””

May you like

He held up the device.

“Your uncle just confessed to something much worse than kidnapping.””
