Chapter 12: The Confession That Changed Everything

The emergency lights flickered above us.

I ran toward the room where Ava had been held.

The door was open.

Inside, Ethan and Oliver were sitting together on the floor.

Ava was nowhere to be seen.

“Where's your sister?”” I asked.

Ethan pointed toward the opposite hallway.

“She went with the man.””

“What man?””

“The one who said he was taking her to Mommy.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

Ethan looked down.

“Uncle Richard.””

I turned toward Robert.

He was already calling for officers.

“Richard has Ava. Seal the exits. Check every vehicle.””

Vanessa began crying.

“He's going to the underground garage.””

Robert grabbed her arm.

“Show us.””

We ran through the corridor.

At the bottom of the staircase was a reinforced door leading to the garage.

A black SUV was already moving toward the exit.

Robert fired a warning shot into the air.

The vehicle accelerated.

Two officers moved their patrol car across the driveway.

The SUV swerved, struck a concrete pillar, and stopped.

Richard climbed out.

But Ava wasn't inside.

I ran toward him.

“Where is my daughter?””

He looked at me.

Then he smiled.

“You really should have listened to your father.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“WHERE IS AVA?””

Robert pulled me away.

“Marcus! Let us handle him!””

Richard was handcuffed.

But he continued smiling.

“She knows the truth now.””

“What truth?””

He leaned closer.

“Ask Danielle why she never told you what happened in that hospital.””

I froze.

Robert searched Richard's vehicle.

The back seat was empty.

No Ava.

No belongings.

Nothing.

Then an officer found a small piece of paper beneath the passenger seat.

It contained an address.

A private medical facility outside the city.

The same facility where Danielle had been held.

I looked at Robert.

“That's where he's taking her?””

Robert shook his head.

“He wasn't driving there. The address may be a decoy.””

Richard laughed.

“You're all still looking at the wrong person.””

Robert grabbed him by the arm.

“Enough.””

I stepped closer.

“What did my father know?””

Richard's smile disappeared.

“Your father knew the truth about Oliver.””

I looked toward the laboratory.

“Oliver is Daniel's son.””

Richard shook his head.

“That's what you believe.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“Explain.””

Richard leaned toward me.

“Oliver was born during Danielle's first pregnancy.””

The world seemed to stop.

I remembered the miscarriage.

The hospital.

The empty nursery.

The years Danielle had spent unable to talk about it.

“You're saying Oliver is mine?””

Richard nodded.

“Biologically, yes.””

I stared at him.

“Then who is Daniel's son?””

Richard smiled again.

“Ethan.””

I couldn't move.

Robert looked between us.

“That's impossible. We have medical records.””

“Medical records Daniel paid to falsify.””

I felt as though someone had punched me in the chest.

My two boys.

The child I believed had died.

And the child I believed was mine.

Everything had been reversed.

“Why?”” I whispered.

Richard shrugged.

“Daniel wanted an heir. He couldn't have children with Vanessa. When Danielle became pregnant, he saw an opportunity.””

I grabbed his collar.

“What did he do?””

“Your wife discovered the affair. She was going to expose him.””

“That's why you took her?””

“No. That's why Daniel took her.””

I looked toward Robert.

He was listening carefully.

Richard continued.

“Your father tried to stop him. He wanted the children protected. But Daniel had already altered the hospital records.””

I felt sick.

“Why did you keep Oliver?””

“Because your father asked me to.””

“And Ethan?””

“Because Daniel paid me.””

The answer was so simple that I almost laughed.

My family had destroyed itself for money.

Robert's radio crackled.

An officer had located a second vehicle near the east gate.

A woman was driving.

They had stopped her.

I rushed outside.

A police car stood beside a silver sedan.

The driver was Danielle.

She was holding Ava.

My daughter was crying, but she was alive.

I ran toward them.

“Danielle!””

She stepped out of the vehicle.

Ava jumped into my arms.

“Daddy!””

I held her so tightly that she complained.

“Daddy, you're squeezing me!””

I immediately loosened my grip.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””

She buried her face against my chest.

“I thought you weren't coming.””

I kissed the top of her head.

“I will always come.””

Danielle approached.

For the first time in four years, I stood close enough to touch my wife.

She looked thinner.

There were faint scars near her wrists, and her hair had grown longer.

But her eyes were the same.

I reached for her hand.

She let me hold it.

“Are you all right?”” I whispered.

She nodded.

Then she looked toward the house.

“Did you find the agreement?””

Robert approached.

“Yes. But Richard took the original.””

Danielle shook her head.

“No, he didn't.””

She reached inside her coat and removed a folded document.

I stared.

“Where did you get that?””

“Your father gave it to me before he died.””

Robert took the document.

It was the original trust agreement.

The signature was authentic.

The protection clause was intact.

And beneath it was another page.

A handwritten letter from my father.

I unfolded it.

Marcus,

If you are reading this, then I failed to protect the people I love.

I discovered that Daniel had falsified the hospital records. I discovered that Richard had helped him. I also discovered that Vanessa had become involved.

I was afraid that exposing them immediately would place the children in danger.

I made a terrible decision. I chose silence.

My hands shook.

The letter continued.

There is one more truth you must know.

The children are not the only beneficiaries of the trust.

I turned the page.

A fourth name appeared.

*Danielle Cole.*

She had been given control of the entire trust if the children were ever separated from their biological parents through fraud or coercion.

Robert looked up.

“Your father wanted Danielle to control the estate.””

I stared at my wife.

She nodded.

“He knew I would fight for the children.””

I read the final paragraph.

If Richard or Daniel attempts to claim guardianship, the trust must be transferred immediately to Danielle. No family member may challenge this decision.

I looked at Robert.

“Can we use this?””

He nodded.

“If the document is authenticated, yes. It could remove Richard's authority immediately.””

Then Danielle touched my arm.

“Marcus, there's something else.””

I turned.

“What?””

She looked toward Ethan and Oliver.

“Before you make any decisions about the boys, you need to know which one is medically at risk.””

I frowned.

“The doctor said Ethan had the blood disorder.””

Danielle shook her head.

“Both boys do.””

I felt my stomach tighten.

“What?””

“Oliver inherited the same condition. Ethan's results were altered to make it look as though he was the only one.””

Robert looked at the medical files.

“Why would Daniel do that?””

Danielle's eyes filled with tears.

“Because the treatment was developed using research connected to the trust.””

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?””

She took a breath.

“It means Daniel has been testing an experimental treatment on the children for years.””

I looked toward the laboratory.

My sons had been treated like property.

Like investments.

Like experiments.

And the people responsible had called it protection.

Then Robert's phone rang.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“What is it?”” I asked.

He slowly lowered the phone.

“Daniel has been arrested.””

I exhaled.

Finally.

But Robert wasn't finished.

“However, the medical facility has just reported that one of the children's treatment records has been destroyed.””

“Which child?””

Robert looked at me.

“Oliver.””

I turned toward the boy.

He was standing beside Ethan, holding Ava's hand.

Then Danielle whispered something that made my heart stop.

“Marcus, Oliver wasn't the child Daniel wanted to experiment on.””

I stared at her.

“Then who?””

She looked toward Ethan.

And before she could answer, Ethan suddenly collapsed.

Ava screamed.

“DADDY!””

I dropped to my knees.

My son was unconscious.

Robert shouted for an ambulance.

Danielle began crying.

And as I held Ethan's small hand, I noticed a hospital bracelet around his wrist.

There was a fresh red mark beside his name.

The same mark I had seen in the photograph.

The same mark Vanessa had warned me about.

May you like

Someone had already administered the treatment.

And according to the label attached to the bracelet, the next dose was scheduled for midnight.
