Chapter 14: The Woman My Father Tried to Protect

The photograph showed my father in a laboratory.

Beside him stood a woman in a white coat, holding a folder.

On the back, beneath his handwriting, was a name.

*Dr. Helena Ward.*

Robert recognized it immediately.

“She was the lead researcher on the original project.””

“Where is she now?””

“Retired. Living outside the city.””

Danielle studied the photograph.

“I remember her.””

I turned toward her.

“You met her?””

“Once. She came to the hospital after Oliver was born. She wanted to speak with your father.””

“What did she say?””

“She told me the treatment was still experimental and that neither boy should receive it without independent testing.””

I looked at Robert.

“Find her.””

He made the call.

Meanwhile, Vanessa was brought into a separate room at the hospital.

She looked exhausted.

Her hair was disheveled, and the confidence she once carried had disappeared.

I stood across from her.

“Tell me everything.””

She lowered her eyes.

“I know.””

“No more half-truths. No more protecting Daniel.””

She nodded.

“I met Daniel six years ago. He told me he was trying to protect the family from your father.””

“Why did you believe him?””

“Because he showed me documents proving your father had funded an experimental treatment using money from the trust.””

“That doesn't explain why you helped him.””

Vanessa looked up.

“He promised me a future.””

I laughed bitterly.

“A future?””

“He said he would divorce his first wife and marry me. He said you were too weak to run the company, and that when the trust transferred to him, we could start over.””

I stared at her.

“You were planning to marry me while helping my brother steal my children.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn't know he intended to hurt them.””

“But you knew Danielle was imprisoned.””

She nodded.

“I helped move her from the first clinic. I thought Daniel wanted her hidden until she agreed to sign some documents.””

“And when she escaped?””

“I helped her.””

“Why?””

Vanessa took a shaky breath.

“Because I found out what Daniel was doing to the boys.””

I waited.

She continued.

“I found the treatment logs. The dosage records were being altered. The boys were receiving a compound that hadn't passed safety testing. When I confronted Daniel, he told me it was necessary.””

“Necessary for what?””

“To finish the research.””

I leaned forward.

“Who was the woman in the photograph?””

Vanessa glanced at it.

“Dr. Ward. She tried to stop the program.””

“Where is she?””

“I don't know. Daniel said she had been paid to disappear.””

Robert entered.

“We found her.””

Vanessa looked frightened.

“Then you need to hurry.””

“Why?””

“Because Daniel has a second copy of the formula. He'll destroy it if he thinks the police have it.””

Robert's radio crackled.

An officer reported that Dr. Ward was on her way to the hospital.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Why didn't you tell us all this earlier?””

She wiped her eyes.

“Because I was afraid you would hate me.””

I stared at her.

“You helped put my family through hell.””

“I know.””

“You let my daughter believe her mother was dead.””

“I know.””

“You helped a man experiment on my sons.””

Vanessa broke down.

“I know.””

For a moment, I wanted to scream.

But there was nothing left to say.

I turned away.

“You'll tell the police everything.””

She nodded.

“I will.””

Dr. Ward arrived twenty minutes later.

She was in her sixties, with silver hair and a calm expression.

She carried a leather briefcase.

When she saw the photograph, she sighed.

“Your father kept this?””

“Yes.””

She sat down.

“Then perhaps he finally found a way to make things right.””

I placed the treatment logs on the table.

“Explain what happened to my sons.””

Dr. Ward opened her briefcase.

“The original treatment was developed to help children with a rare inherited blood disorder. It was promising, but the early trials showed serious complications.””

“Could it have killed them?””

“Yes.””

Danielle closed her eyes.

Dr. Ward continued.

“Your father funded the research. When he learned about the complications, he ordered the trial suspended. He also insisted that all remaining samples be destroyed.””

“But Daniel continued.””

“Daniel believed the research could be turned into a valuable patent. He wanted exclusive rights.””

“What about the treatment Ethan received?””

“That was a modified compound. It was never approved for use in children.””

I clenched my fists.

“Can the boys recover?””

Dr. Ward looked at me.

“With proper specialist care, there is reason to hope. But we need to monitor both of them carefully.””

She opened a second folder.

“This is the original research record. It includes the safety data Daniel concealed.””

Robert took it.

“Can you authenticate it?””

“Yes. I signed every page.””

I looked at the photograph.

“Why did my father keep this from me?””

Dr. Ward's expression softened.

“He was ashamed. He believed he had created a monster by funding the research. When he discovered what Daniel was doing, he tried to stop him privately.””

“He should have told me.””

“Yes,” she said quietly.

“He should have.””

A nurse entered.

“Mr. Cole, Ethan's condition is improving. The doctors would like to speak with you.””

I thanked Dr. Ward and went to the treatment room.

Ethan was sitting up.

Oliver was beside him, showing him a drawing.

Ava sat on the other side, carefully coloring a house with four figures in front.

“Who's that?”” I asked.

She pointed.

“That's me. That's Ethan. That's Oliver.””

“And the two grown-ups?””

She smiled.

“Mommy and Daddy.””

Danielle sat beside her.

I felt something inside me loosen.

For the first time, I could imagine a future that wasn't built around fear.

Then Robert appeared at the door.

“Marcus, Daniel wants to make a statement.””

I followed him into the corridor.

Daniel was on a secure video call from the detention center.

His face looked pale.

“You found Ward,” he said.

“Yes.””

He laughed.

“Then you know the truth.””

“I know enough.””

“You think she can save the boys?””

“She can help them.””

Daniel leaned closer to the camera.

“There's something you still don't understand. The original formula was never the real prize.””

I said nothing.

He smiled.

“The formula is worthless without the biological samples.””

Robert stiffened.

“What samples?””

Daniel looked directly at me.

“The samples your father collected from the children before he died.””

I felt cold.

“Where are they?””

Daniel's smile widened.

“Ask Richard.””

Robert immediately turned toward the officers.

“Get Richard's location.””

But Daniel wasn't finished.

“Your uncle kept the samples in a private vault. And if he hasn't destroyed them already, the police are about to discover why your father was so desperate to keep them hidden.””

The call ended.

I turned to Robert.

“What's in those samples?””

He looked toward the hospital room.

“I don't know.””

Then an officer rushed into the corridor.

“Detective! We found something in Richard's property.””

Robert took the report.

His face changed.

“What?””

The officer swallowed.

“Three additional patient files. Different names. Same treatment protocol.””

I looked at him.

“Children?””

He nodded.

“Three children who disappeared from private medical facilities over the past five years.””

I felt the floor shift beneath me.

My family hadn't just destroyed our lives.

It had built a system that could have hurt other families, too.

Robert folded the report.

“We're going to find those children.””

I looked through the glass at my sons.

May you like

Then I made a promise.

“Not one more child is going to disappear.””
