Chapter 3: The Secret My Brother Buried
Daniel arrived at the house forty minutes later.
He didn't come alone.
His black SUV stopped outside the front gate, followed by a second vehicle carrying two men in dark suits.
I watched from the upstairs window.
My brother stepped out wearing an expensive navy suit. He looked exactly as he had at my father's funeral: polished shoes, perfect hair, and a smile that made people trust him before he even opened his mouth.
He had brought a bouquet of white roses.
For my wedding.
The sight made me sick.
Robert stood beside me.
“Don't confront him alone,” he warned.
“I'm not planning to.””
“Good. I've requested additional officers.””
Downstairs, Vanessa was sitting on the sofa with her wedding robe wrapped tightly around her body.
Ava was upstairs with the second officer.
I walked down the stairs.
Daniel entered without waiting for an invitation.
“Marcus!””
He opened his arms as if he expected a hug.
I didn't move.
His smile faded slightly.
“What's going on? Robert called me and said there was some kind of emergency.””
I looked at the flowers.
“Those are beautiful.””
Daniel glanced at them.
“For the bride. I thought I'd bring something special.””
“That's thoughtful.””
I took the bouquet from him.
Then I dropped it into the trash.
Daniel's jaw tightened.
“What the hell is wrong with you?””
I stepped closer.
“Where is Danielle?””
He stared at me.
For one brief second, something passed across his face.
Then it disappeared.
“I don't know what you're talking about.””
“Don't lie to me.””
“Marcus, you've been through a lot. Today is your wedding day. You should be upstairs getting ready.””
“Did you put my wife beneath the pool?””
Daniel looked toward Robert.
“Is this some kind of joke?””
Robert approached.
“We found evidence in a concealed room beneath the pool deck.””
Daniel laughed.
“That's ridiculous.””
“Your name appears in documents recovered from the room.””
“Documents can be forged.””
“And your fingerprints are on the keypad.””
Daniel's smile vanished.
He turned toward Vanessa.
“You told them?””
Vanessa stood up.
“You said she was dead.””
Daniel looked at her with open contempt.
“You should have kept your mouth shut.””
I moved toward him.
“Answer me.””
He raised both hands.
“Fine. You want the truth? Danielle was unstable.
She was paranoid. She believed everyone was conspiring against her.””
“She wrote letters to me.””
“Letters?””
“Dozens of them.””
Daniel shook his head.
“She's always been dramatic.””
I struck him.
My fist connected with his jaw.
He stumbled backward, knocking a decorative table onto the floor.
Robert immediately grabbed my arm.
“Marcus! Step back!””
Daniel touched his mouth.
A thin line of blood appeared on his lower lip.
Then he smiled.
“That's exactly why I never wanted you involved.””
I stared at him.
“What?””
He adjusted his jacket.
“Danielle always knew how to manipulate you. She knew you'd believe anything she said.””
Robert stepped between us.
“Mr. Cole, you're coming with us.””
Daniel laughed.
“On what charge?””
Robert held up the silver locket.
“Kidnapping is a good place to start.””
Daniel looked at it.
For the first time, he seemed genuinely surprised.
Then he turned toward Vanessa.
“You really found the locket?””
She didn't answer.
Daniel's expression hardened.
“You stupid woman.””
Vanessa suddenly stepped forward.
“Don't you dare speak to me like that.””
He pointed at her.
“You were supposed to keep him distracted.””
I felt the room go silent.
“Distracted from what?””
Daniel looked at me.
Then he smiled.
“From the truth about your marriage.””
Robert grabbed his arm.
“That's enough.””
Daniel pulled away.
“You want to know why Danielle disappeared? Ask your wife.””
I turned toward Vanessa.
She was trembling.
“What is he talking about?””
Vanessa shook her head.
“Marcus, please.””
“Tell me.””
Daniel laughed.
“Four years ago, Danielle discovered that someone had been taking money from your company. She found the transfers. She found the shell accounts. And she found the person signing the documents.””
I looked at him.
“Who?””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Me.””
The word hung in the air.
I felt something inside me collapse.
My brother had been stealing from the company I had built with my father.
For years, I had trusted him with our accounts, our employees, and our family's financial future.
“How much?”” I asked.
“That's not important.””
“How much, Daniel?””
“Eleven million.””
Robert immediately looked at the second officer.
Daniel shrugged.
“It's complicated. I intended to put it back.””
“And Danielle found out?””
“She threatened to expose me.””
“So you killed her?””
Daniel's smile disappeared.
“I didn't kill anyone.””
“Then where is she?””
He looked toward the staircase.
“Ask Vanessa.””
I turned.
Vanessa was crying now.
“I didn't know what he was planning,” she whispered.
“Stop saying that. Tell me what happened.””
She pressed her hands against her face.
“Daniel came to me the night Danielle disappeared. He said he needed help moving her.””
The words seemed to drain the air from the room.
“Moving her?””
“She was unconscious.””
I stepped backward.
“What did you do?””
“I helped him bring her to the pool room.””
Robert moved closer.
“Was Danielle alive?””
Vanessa nodded.
“She was breathing.””
I felt my stomach twist.
“Then why didn't you call an ambulance?””
“Daniel said he'd kill us both if I did.””
I stared at her.
“You watched him lock my wife in a basement?””
“I was scared!””
“So was she!””
Vanessa began sobbing.
Daniel shook his head impatiently.
“This is ridiculous. She's making things up to save herself.””
Robert turned toward him.
“Then explain why your fingerprints are on the door.””
Daniel didn't answer.
Instead, he looked directly at me.
“You think you're innocent in all this?””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
“Danielle didn't disappear because of the money alone.””
He reached inside his jacket.
Robert immediately drew his weapon.
“Keep your hands where I can see them!””
Daniel slowly withdrew a folded document.
He tossed it onto the table.
I picked it up.
It was an old medical report.
The hospital logo was familiar.
Four years earlier, Danielle had been admitted for emergency treatment after a miscarriage.
I remembered that night.
I remembered sitting beside her hospital bed, holding her hand while she cried.
But the document in front of me contained information I had never seen.
There was a second report attached.
A genetic testing request.
The father's name was listed.
*Marcus Cole.*
But the result beside it was marked inconclusive.
I looked up.
“What is this?””
Daniel's smile returned.
“Your wife discovered something about that pregnancy.””
I shook my head.
“Don't.””
“She wanted to tell you.””
“Shut up.””
“She believed the baby wasn't yours.””
I grabbed the document.
“That isn't true.””
Daniel leaned closer.
“Then why did she spend her final weeks asking for a DNA test?””
My hands went numb.
Robert took the papers from me.
“That's enough. You're under arrest.””
Two officers moved toward Daniel.
He didn't resist.
Instead, he looked at me over his shoulder.
“You've spent four years mourning the wrong thing, Marcus.””
Then he said something I would never forget.
“Ethan was never buried because Ethan was never dead.””
My heart stopped.
I turned toward Vanessa.
She covered her mouth.
And upstairs, behind the closed bedroom door, Ava began screaming.
“DADDY! THE WOMAN ON THE PHONE SAYS SHE KNOWS WHERE MOMMY IS!””
I ran up the stairs.
Ava stood beside the bed, holding an old mobile phone.
Her face was white.
“Who called you, sweetheart?””
She pointed at the screen.
The number was hidden.
I took the phone.
A woman's voice came through the speaker.
Weak.
Breathless.
But unmistakably familiar.
“Marcus?””
My knees nearly gave out.
“Danielle?””
A long silence followed.
Then she whispered:
“Don't trust Vanessa. Don't trust Daniel.””
I pressed the phone against my ear.
“Where are you? I'm coming to get you.””
Her breathing became uneven.
“Listen carefully. You have to find our son first.””
I closed my eyes.
“Ethan?””
She began crying.
“Marcus, our son is alive.””
Then the call disconnected.
May you like
And when I looked at the phone again, I noticed the final message appearing beneath the unknown number.
*DON'T COME TO THE HOUSE. THEY KNOW I'M CALLING YOU.*
