Chapter 11: The Record That Changed Everything
The word hung in the room.
My mother.
Simone’s mother.
The woman I had never met.
The woman whose existence I knew almost nothing about.
I looked at Simone.
“You’re saying your mother did this?””
Simone nodded slowly.
“She was obsessed with appearances.””
Claire continued.
“She believed our family had to look perfect.””
Marcus shook his head.
“And my daughter?””
Claire looked down.
“She was part of the secret.””
The anger in Marcus’s face returned.
“What secret?””
Simone closed her eyes.
“I was young.””
Marcus laughed.
“You were a grown woman.””
“I was twenty-two.””
“You were a mother.””
The words hurt her.
Because they were true.
I looked at Lily.
She was sitting quietly now.
Too quietly.
I hated that.
A child should not have to listen to adults explain why their life was built on lies.
I crouched beside her.
“Sweetheart, are you okay?””
She nodded.
But her eyes said no.
Claire noticed.
“She deserves the truth.””
I looked at her.
“Then tell it carefully.””
Claire nodded.
“The night Lily was born, my sister gave birth to a baby girl.””
Marcus looked confused.
“My daughter.””
Claire nodded.
“Yes.””
Simone whispered:
“And another baby was born.””
My heart stopped.
“Lily.””
Claire looked at me.
“Yes.””
The room became silent.
“So what are you saying?””
Claire took a breath.
“The records were switched.””
Marcus stared.
“No.””
Simone looked down.
“My mother arranged it.””
I felt dizzy.
“Why?””
Claire answered.
“Because she believed she was protecting the family.””
“That makes no sense.””
“It doesn’t.””
Claire looked at Lily.
“She was sick. She thought the only way to keep control was to remove anything that could destroy our reputation.””
Marcus looked furious.
“So she stole my daughter?””
“No.””
Claire shook her head.
“She did something worse.””
Nobody spoke.
“She made everyone believe they had lost what mattered most.””
I looked at Simone.
“And you helped?””
The question hurt her.
“Yes.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I was scared.””
Marcus stared.
“You helped her.””
“I was trying to undo it.””
“When?””
“After I realized what she had done.””
Claire interrupted.
“But by then, it was too late.””
I looked at her.
“What happened next?””
She walked toward the table.
“There were records. Documents. Evidence.””
She pulled out a small folder.
“I found them years later.””
Marcus took a step forward.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Claire looked at him.
“Because my mother threatened Simone.””
Simone nodded.
“She said if I exposed the truth, she would destroy everything.””
I looked at Simone.
“And you believed her?””
Her eyes filled.
“She had already destroyed my life once.””
Nobody answered.
Claire opened the folder.
Inside were hospital documents.
Birth certificates.
Medical records.
I looked at the names.
Then the dates.
Then the signatures.
My hands started shaking.
Because one document had a name circled.
Lily Walker.
Another had a different name.
The same birthday.
The same hospital.
The same night.
I looked at Claire.
“What am I looking at?””
She whispered:
“The truth about who Lily really is.””
I turned toward my daughter.
She looked frightened.
I immediately covered the papers.
“No.””
Everyone looked at me.
“She’s not a document.””
My voice hardened.
“She’s my daughter.””
Claire nodded.
“I know.””
Marcus looked at Lily.
Tears filled his eyes.
“I don’t know what to call her.””
Lily looked at him.
“You don’t have to.””
The simplicity of her answer broke something in all of us.
Then Simone’s phone rang.
Everyone froze.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
Again.
I noticed.
“Who is it?””
She didn’t answer.
I walked closer.
“Simone.””
She slowly turned the phone around.
A message appeared.
One sentence.
One name.
And a warning.
Your mother knows you found the records.
Simone dropped the phone.
May you like
Because the person who started all of this wasn’t gone.
She was still watching.
