Chapter 9: The Woman Behind the Secret

The name stayed in the air.

Claire.

Marcus looked like someone had just punched him.

“No.””

Simone looked exhausted.

“I never wanted it to happen this way.””

I stared at her.

“What way?””

She didn’t answer.

“Simone.””

Her eyes met mine.

For the first time, I didn’t see confidence.

I saw someone trapped by her own secrets.

“Claire was my sister.””

Marcus froze.

“What?””

Simone nodded.

“She was the only person who believed me.””

Marcus shook his head.

“That’s impossible.””

“She was there when everything happened.””

“What happened?””

Simone looked down.

And for a moment, she seemed like she was fighting herself.

Then she spoke.

“Claire found out the truth about our family.””

“Our family?””

I asked.

She looked at me.

“The family I came from.””

I waited.

She continued.

“My parents were never good people.””

The room became quiet.

“They hid things. They lied. They destroyed lives when they were afraid of losing control.””

I felt a chill.

“Are you saying you became like them?””

Her face tightened.

“I’m saying I was trying not to.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“But you took my daughter.””

Simone looked at him.

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I didn’t.””

Marcus stared.

“Then where is she?””

Simone looked at Lily.

And Lily instinctively moved closer to me.

“I don’t know.””

Marcus looked furious.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“I expect you to believe that I made mistakes.””

“That’s not an answer.””

“No.””

Simone’s voice cracked.

“It’s the truth.””

I watched her carefully.

Because I still didn’t trust her.

But something had changed.

The story was no longer simple.

She was not just the villain standing in the hallway.

She was someone who had been hiding something much larger.

That didn’t excuse anything.

But it meant there was more.

I looked at Marcus.

“What does Claire have to do with Lily?””

Simone closed her eyes.

“She found her.””

“Found who?””

“Your daughter.””

The words made the room freeze.

Marcus looked at Lily.

“Why?””

Simone swallowed.

“Because Claire knew the truth about what happened eight years ago.””

I stepped forward.

“What truth?””

Before she could answer, Lily suddenly spoke.

“Daddy.””

I turned.

“What?””

She was looking at the photograph on the desk.

The baby picture.

Her face had gone pale.

“I’ve seen her before.””

My heart stopped.

“Who?””

She pointed at the baby.

“That baby.””

Everyone looked.

Lily touched the picture carefully.

“She was in my dream.””

Nobody spoke.

I knelt beside her.

“Sweetheart, what do you mean?””

“I don’t know.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“But I remember a woman singing.””

Simone went completely still.

“What song?””

Lily looked at her.

A long silence passed.

Then Lily quietly hummed a melody.

Simone covered her mouth.

Marcus stepped back.

Because he recognized it too.

“What is it?”” I asked.

Simone whispered:

“That was Claire’s song.””

I looked at Marcus.

“Why would my daughter know a song your sister sang?””

Nobody answered.

Then the front door slammed downstairs.

Hard.

Everyone turned.

A voice called from the entrance.

“Simone?””

Simone’s face changed instantly.

“No.””

The fear in her voice returned.

Not the fear of being exposed.

The fear of someone arriving.

I moved toward the stairs.

“Who is that?””

Simone grabbed my arm.

“Don’t.””

I pulled away.

“Who is downstairs?””

Her lips trembled.

And then the person at the bottom of the staircase spoke again.

“Darius?””

My blood went cold.

Because I knew that voice.

I had heard it before.

In old videos.

In the few pictures Simone kept hidden.

A voice from a person who was supposed to be gone forever.

Marcus whispered:

May you like

“Claire.””

And then the woman standing downstairs looked up at us.
