Chapter 5: The Name She Tried to Erase

I read the name three times.

Each time hoping my eyes were wrong.

They weren’t.

Lily.

The same name.

The same age.

The same birthday.

My daughter stood upstairs, unaware that the entire foundation of her life had just shifted beneath her feet.

I looked at Marcus.

“You’re saying your daughter’s name was Lily?””

He nodded.

“Yes.””

Simone closed her eyes.

“Darius, please.””

I turned toward her.

“Please what?””

Her voice softened.

“I can explain.””

I almost couldn’t believe those words.

After everything.

After the balcony.

After the fear in Lily’s eyes.

She still wanted to explain.

Not apologize.

Explain.

Marcus stepped closer.

“She always does that.””

Simone glared at him.

“Stay out of this.””

“This is my life.””

“No.””

Her voice sharpened.

“This is my past.””

Marcus shook his head.

“And that’s exactly what you wanted.””

I looked at the documents again.

“What happened to your daughter?””

Marcus didn’t answer immediately.

He looked toward the staircase.

Toward where Lily had disappeared.

Then he spoke.

“She was taken from me.””

The room felt colder.

“By who?””

His eyes moved to Simone.

My heart sank before he even said it.

“By her.””

I stared at my wife.

“No.””

The word came out automatically.

Not because I believed Simone.

Because my mind was fighting against the impossible.

The woman I married.

The woman who cooked dinner with Lily.

The woman who helped her with homework.

The woman who smiled in family photos.

Could she really be capable of this?

Simone saw the doubt on my face.

And she grabbed onto it.

“Darius, listen to me.””

I said nothing.

“She’s manipulating you.””

Marcus laughed bitterly.

“Still using the same words.””

Simone ignored him.

“You know me.””

I looked at her.

And that was the problem.

I thought I did.

“I know the person you showed me.””

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

Enough.

Marcus opened the folder again.

“There’s something else.””

He pulled out a document.

“This was filed six years ago.””

I looked at it.

A custody request.

Marcus pointed to the signature.

“Look.””

I saw Simone’s name.

Then I saw something underneath.

A handwritten note.

My stomach twisted.

“What is this?””

Marcus’s voice became quieter.

“That was written after she found out I was going to get full custody.””

I read the sentence.

Only one line.

Only one.

But it was enough.

“She can’t know the truth.””

I looked up.

“Who is ‘she’?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

Because we all knew.

The sound of footsteps interrupted us.

I turned.

Lily stood halfway down the stairs.

She looked terrified.

“Daddy?””

I immediately walked toward her.

“Why are you awake?””

She looked at Simone.

Then at Marcus.

Then at me.

“Is he here because of me?””

My heart broke.

“No.””

But she didn’t believe me.

Children know when adults are lying.

I crouched down.

“Lily, come here.””

She slowly walked toward me.

I held her hand.

Marcus looked at her with tears in his eyes.

“I’m sorry.””

Lily looked confused.

“Do I know you?””

The question destroyed him.

He looked away.

“No.””

Simone suddenly stepped forward.

“That’s enough.””

I turned.

“What?””

She pointed toward Marcus.

“He is trying to steal our family.””

“Our family?””

My voice became colder.

“You locked my daughter outside.””

Her face hardened.

“She needed discipline.””

The same words.

Again.

And this time, they sounded different.

They sounded rehearsed.

Marcus looked at Simone.

“You never changed.””

She stared at him.

“You don’t know anything.””

“I know you were afraid she would remember.””

A strange silence followed.

I looked at Lily.

“Remember what?””

Nobody answered.

Then Lily whispered:

“I do remember something.””

Every person in the room froze.

I turned toward her.

“What?””

She looked at Simone.

Her small voice barely carried.

“She told me never to talk about the room upstairs.””

My eyes moved toward the second floor.

The room upstairs.

A room I had never been inside.

Because Simone had always said it was just storage.

I looked at her.

“Why can’t Lily talk about that room?””

Simone’s face went completely blank.

May you like

Then she said something that made my blood run cold.

“Because some things should stay buried.””
