Chapter 14: The Truth Lily Deserved

Nobody breathed.

Not even Evelyn.

The voice on the phone continued.

“I know you have questions.””

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who are you?””

The woman on the other end started crying softly.

“My name is Rachel.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way Simone reacted did.

Her face went pale.

“Rachel…”

I looked at her.

“You know her.””

Simone covered her mouth.

Claire whispered:

“Oh no.””

Marcus looked confused.

“Who is Rachel?””

Simone didn’t answer.

I raised my voice.

“Who is Rachel?””

The phone stayed silent.

Then the woman spoke.

“I’m the person who was supposed to raise Lily.””

My entire body went cold.

I looked at my daughter.

Then at Simone.

Then at Evelyn.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel took a shaky breath.

“Darius, I need you to understand something. The story you’ve been told is not complete.””

I walked away from everyone.

“Then complete it.””

For a moment, all I heard was her breathing.

Then she said:

“I was Lily’s birth mother.””

The words shattered everything.

Lily looked at me.

I immediately lowered the phone.

Not because I wanted to hide the truth.

Because I wanted to protect her.

But Rachel continued.

“I know she’s your daughter. I know you love her.””

I looked at Lily.

“I do.””

Rachel cried.

“I never stopped loving her.””

Marcus stepped closer.

“Rachel?””

He recognized the name.

His face changed.

“Who is she?””

I put the phone on speaker.

Rachel heard him.

“Marcus?””

He stepped back.

“No.””

Rachel whispered:

“I’m sorry.””

Marcus looked overwhelmed.

“What is happening?””

Claire answered.

“She was part of the original plan.””

I looked at Claire.

“What plan?””

Rachel spoke.

“The night Lily was born, Evelyn convinced everyone there was a medical emergency.””

Her voice shook.

“She separated us.””

Simone whispered:

“I remember.””

Everyone looked at her.

She looked broken.

“I remember Rachel crying.””

My anger returned.

“And you did nothing?””

Simone looked at me.

“I was scared.””

“You always say that.””

The words hurt her.

Because they were true.

Rachel continued.

“I thought I lost my baby.””

A pause.

“Then years later, I found out she was alive.””

Lily looked confused.

“Why didn’t you come get me?””

The question was so innocent.

So painful.

Nobody had an answer.

Rachel cried.

“Because I was told you were safe.””

Lily looked at me.

“I was?””

I knelt beside her.

“Yes.””

She looked at Simone.

“Was I?””

Simone started crying.

“Yes.””

Lily looked away.

“But you scared me.””

Simone covered her face.

“I know.””

That was the first time Lily had said it directly.

Not through fear.

Not through whispers.

To her face.

And Simone had no defense.

Only regret.

Evelyn suddenly moved toward the door.

Nobody noticed at first.

Until Claire saw her.

“Where are you going?””

Evelyn stopped.

“This conversation is over.””

“No.””

Claire stepped in front of her.

“It’s finally beginning.””

Evelyn looked at her.

“You think these papers will destroy me?””

Claire smiled sadly.

“No.””

She held up her phone.

“But the recording will.””

Evelyn froze.

I looked at Claire.

“What recording?””

She looked at me.

“The one where Evelyn admits everything.””

Evelyn’s face changed completely.

For the first time all night…

She looked afraid.

“How?””

Claire answered:

“Because I learned from you.””

The room went silent.

Claire looked at Lily.

“I kept proof.””

Evelyn stared at her.

“You betrayed me.””

Claire shook her head.

“No.””

She looked at Simone.

“I saved you.””

Then at Marcus.

“I saved him.””

Then at Lily.

“And I saved her.””

The next morning, everything changed.

The police arrived.

The documents were reviewed.

The recordings were handed over.

Evelyn’s carefully built world began collapsing.

But before she was taken away, she looked at me one last time.

“You think you won.””

I stared at her.

“I know I did.””

She smiled faintly.

“You don’t understand.””

“What?””

Her eyes moved to Lily.

“Truth always changes people.””

Then she walked away.

May you like

And for the first time in eight years…

Nobody was controlling the story.
