Chapter 7: The Letters Hidden in the Walls

The envelope felt heavier than paper should have felt.

I held it between my fingers, staring at the handwriting on the front.

To Lily.

Not to a future child.

Not to a stranger.

To my daughter.

The date stamped in the corner made my stomach turn.

Eight years ago.

A year before I met Simone.

A year before I knew she existed.

A year before Lily was even born.

“Darius,” Marcus said quietly.

I looked at him.

“What is this?””

His eyes stayed on the envelope.

“I was hoping you would tell me.””

I looked back at Simone.

She hadn’t moved.

That scared me.

Because the Simone I knew always had something to say.

A defense.

An explanation.

A carefully chosen sentence that made everyone else question themselves.

But now?

Nothing.

Just silence.

“Open it,” I said.

Simone finally reacted.

“No.””

The word came out instantly.

Everyone looked at her.

She seemed to realize what she had done.

Then she softened her voice.

“Darius, please.””

I stared at her.

“Why are you afraid of a letter?””

She looked at Lily.

And that was when I knew.

Whatever was inside that envelope wasn’t about me.

It wasn’t about Marcus.

It was about my daughter.

I opened it.

The paper inside was old.

The handwriting was neat.

Careful.

Like someone had taken time to make every word perfect.

I read the first line.

My hands started shaking.

Dear Lily,

I stopped.

I couldn’t continue.

Not because I didn’t want to.

Because I suddenly felt like I was reading something I was never supposed to find.

Lily stepped closer.

“Daddy?””

I folded the letter slightly.

“Sweetheart, wait upstairs.””

“No.””

Her voice surprised me.

She wasn’t crying.

She wasn’t scared.

She was tired.

Tired of adults keeping secrets around her.

“I want to know.””

I looked at my eight-year-old daughter.

And I realized something.

For months, maybe years, everyone had been deciding what Lily could handle.

Everyone except Lily.

I handed the letter to Marcus.

“Read it.””

Marcus hesitated.

Then he began.

“Dear Lily…”

His voice cracked.

“‘If you are reading this, it means I wasn’t brave enough to tell you myself.’”

Simone closed her eyes.

Marcus continued.

“‘You deserve to know that someone has been watching over you since the day you were born.’”

I looked at Simone.

She looked away.

“‘I know you may not understand why certain people disappeared from your life. I know you may wonder why some questions were never answered.’”

Marcus stopped.

His fingers tightened around the paper.

“What?””

I looked at him.

He swallowed.

“‘But please remember this. None of it was your fault.’”

The room went silent.

Lily looked at me.

“Daddy…”

I pulled her closer.

Marcus continued.

“‘There are people who will tell you they are protecting you. Sometimes they are. Sometimes they are only protecting themselves.’”

My eyes moved toward Simone.

Her face had changed.

She looked angry now.

Not afraid.

Angry.

“Give me that.””

She stepped forward.

I blocked her.

“No.””

“You don’t know what you’re reading.””

“Then explain.””

She said nothing.

“Explain.””

Still nothing.

Marcus looked at the next page.

“There’s a name.””

“What name?””

He looked at me.

“Claire.””

The name meant nothing.

But Simone reacted.

Her eyes widened.

Just for a second.

Enough.

“Who is Claire?”” I asked.

“No one.””

Marcus laughed quietly.

“Still lying.””

I turned to him.

“Who is Claire?””

He looked at Simone.

“She was the person who tried to help me find my daughter.””

My heart sank.

“Your daughter?””

Marcus nodded.

“She disappeared after Simone left.””

Simone’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t get to rewrite history.””

Marcus stepped forward.

“And you don’t get to erase it.””

The tension in the room became unbearable.

Then Lily spoke.

Quietly.

“I know that name.””

Everyone turned.

“What?”” I asked.

Lily looked confused.

“I heard Simone say it.””

My entire body went still.

“When?””

She looked toward the floor.

“Last month.””

Simone immediately interrupted.

“She’s confused.””

I looked at my daughter.

“Lily, what did you hear?””

She swallowed.

“She was on the phone.””

My heart raced.

“What did she say?””

Lily squeezed my hand.

“She said…”

Her voice became smaller.

“She said Claire was getting too close.””

Nobody spoke.

Marcus went pale.

“No.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He stared at Simone.

“She found her.””

Simone’s expression changed.

“What are you talking about?””

Marcus’s voice dropped.

“After all these years…”

He looked at me.

“Claire found my daughter.””

I felt cold.

“But how?””

Marcus looked at Lily.

May you like

And suddenly, the necklace around her neck seemed heavier than ever.

“Because she may have been looking at the wrong family.””
