Chapter 1: The Girl Who Fell Before the Vows
“Stop ruining my wedding!””
Vanessa’s voice cut through the music, the laughter, and the soft conversations drifting beneath the white floral arch.
For a second, nobody moved.
The luxury outdoor venue looked like something from a magazine — rows of elegant chairs, polished stone pathways, white roses climbing the ceremony arch, and guests dressed in their finest clothes. Everything was perfect.
Except for the little girl lying on the ground.
My daughter, Lily.
I saw her before I saw anything else.
Her light-blue dress was wrinkled from the fall. Her long braids were scattered across the stone aisle. Tears rolled down her cheeks as she held her small hands against her chest, trying to catch her breath.
And standing over her was the woman I was supposed to marry in less than an hour.
Vanessa.
My future wife.
My stomach dropped.
“Lily!””
I don’t remember running.
One moment, I was near the entrance greeting guests. The next, I was pushing through the crowd, my heart pounding so loudly that everything else sounded distant.
The security guard near the ceremony area looked frozen. His eyes moved between Vanessa and Lily, like he couldn’t believe what he had just witnessed.
Vanessa didn’t even look sorry.
She adjusted the sleeve of her cream wedding gown and stared down at my daughter.
“She should have listened to me,” Vanessa said.
I stopped in front of Lily and immediately pulled her behind me.
My body moved before my mind did.
I became a wall between them.
“What did you do to my daughter?”” I asked.
My voice was low, but everyone heard it.
The entire wedding venue went silent.
Vanessa blinked.
For the first time, her confidence cracked.
“Marcus, don’t make this dramatic,” she said.
“She was causing a scene.””
I looked at Lily.
She was shaking.
My eight-year-old daughter, who always tried to be brave even when she was scared, was hiding behind my tuxedo jacket like the world had suddenly become unsafe.
I turned back to Vanessa.
“You put your hands on my child.””
A few guests gasped.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I barely touched her.””
“You pushed her.””
“She was blocking the aisle.””
I stared at her.
The woman standing in front of me was wearing the dress she had spent months choosing. The same woman who had held my hand while planning every detail of this wedding.
The same woman who told me she wanted to become a family.
But now she was standing there, explaining why my daughter deserved to fall.
“Marcus,” Vanessa whispered, lowering her voice.
“You’re embarrassing me.””
I almost laughed.
Embarrassing her?
My daughter was crying on the ground, and she was worried about the wedding pictures.
“Are you serious right now?”” I asked.
Vanessa’s jaw tightened.
“She doesn’t understand boundaries.””
“She’s eight.””
“She’s old enough to know when she’s unwanted.””
The words hit harder than I expected.
Lily grabbed my jacket tighter.
I looked down at her.
“Baby, what happened?””
She didn’t answer at first.
Her lips trembled.
Then she looked past me at Vanessa.
“She told me to leave.””
Vanessa immediately stepped forward.
“That is not what I said.””
But Lily’s tears came faster.
“She said you wouldn’t need me anymore after today.””
The air changed.
I felt every guest watching.
Every person waiting for an explanation.
Vanessa shook her head quickly.
“Marcus, she’s misunderstanding.””
I turned around slowly.
“Then explain.””
Her mouth opened.
Nothing came out.
That was the first moment I noticed something strange.
Vanessa, who always had an answer.
Vanessa, who could convince anyone of anything.
Was silent.
The security guard finally stepped closer.
“Sir,” he said carefully, “I saw what happened.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“Stay out of this.””
The guard frowned.
“No, ma’am. I think this needs to be addressed.””
The guests began whispering.
Phones were lowering.
People were no longer watching a wedding.
They were watching a family falling apart.
I knelt beside Lily and wiped her tears.
“Look at me,” I said softly.
She looked up.
“Did Vanessa tell you to leave because of something you did?””
Lily shook her head.
“No.””
“Then why?””
Her fingers twisted around the fabric of my jacket.
“Dad…”
Her voice became a whisper.
“She said after you marry her…”
She stopped.
My heart started racing.
“After I marry her, what?””
Lily looked toward Vanessa.
Fear crossed her face.
“She said…”
Her voice broke.
“She said I won’t be living with you anymore.””
The world seemed to stop.
I slowly stood.
Vanessa’s face changed.
Not sadness.
Not guilt.
Fear.
And that was when I realized my wedding wasn’t falling apart because of what happened in front of everyone.
It was falling apart because my daughter had just revealed something Vanessa never wanted me to hear.
I looked at the woman beneath the wedding arch.
“Vanessa,” I said quietly.
She swallowed.
“Marcus…”
“What did you mean when you told my daughter she wouldn’t be living with me?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
And then her phone, lying on the nearby table, suddenly lit up with a new message.
Her eyes moved toward the screen.
May you like
I followed her gaze.
And the name on the message made my blood run cold.
