Chapter 10: The Voice From the Past

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

The wedding venue disappeared around me.

The guests.

The flowers.

The broken decorations.

Everything faded.

All I could hear was the woman on the phone breathing.

“I’m sorry you finally found out.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“My name is Rachel.””

The name meant nothing.

But the way she said it made my chest tighten.

“I knew your wife.””

I looked at Daniel.

He was watching me carefully.

Like he already knew this call was coming.

That bothered me more than anything.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

“Not far.””

“Why are you calling me now?””

Her voice became softer.

“Because I waited too long.””

I looked toward Lily.

She was standing beside me, holding Denise’s hand.

Still scared.

Still confused.

Still trying to understand why adults kept hurting her.

“Tell me the truth,” I said.

Rachel sighed.

“The night your wife died wasn’t an accident the way you were told.””

My heart stopped.

“What do you mean?””

“I mean someone made sure you only heard part of the story.””

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

Fear.

“Daniel was there,” Rachel continued.

“I know.””

A long silence.

Then she said:

“Vanessa was too.””

My entire body went still.

I looked at Vanessa.

She immediately looked away.

“No.””

The word escaped my mouth.

Not because I didn’t believe it.

Because I didn’t want to.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Marcus, don’t.””

I stared at her.

“Don’t what?””

“Don’t believe a stranger.””

I almost smiled.

A painful smile.

“You’re telling me not to believe strangers?””

Her face fell.

After everything.

After the lies.

That was still her defense.

Rachel spoke again.

“Marcus, I can prove it.””

“How?””

“Because I was the person who found the car.””

My breath caught.

“You were there?””

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell the police?””

She hesitated.

And that hesitation told me there was more.

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

Silence.

Then:

“Someone stopped me.””

I looked at Daniel.

Then Vanessa.

Neither spoke.

“Who?””

Rachel’s voice shook.

“Your brother.””

The anger came back instantly.

But this time it mixed with something else.

Disbelief.

Pain.

Betrayal.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Marcus.””

I turned.

“You knew.””

He didn’t answer.

“You knew someone else was there.””

His silence became a confession.

Lily looked up at me.

“Dad?””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“It’s okay, baby.””

But it wasn’t.

Nothing was okay.

Daniel looked exhausted.

“I was trying to protect you.””

“Stop saying that.””

My voice cut through the air.

“Everyone who hurt me today keeps saying they were protecting me.””

Daniel looked down.

“Because we were.””

I stared at him.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You were protecting yourselves.””

Nobody responded.

Because everyone knew it was true.

Rachel continued.

“Marcus, I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“Your wife knew something was wrong before the crash.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

“She had been asking questions.””

“About what?””

“About Daniel.””

The world tilted.

I looked at my brother.

“What questions?””

Rachel paused.

“She believed he was hiding money.””

Daniel’s face changed.

“That’s a lie.””

Rachel continued like she didn’t hear him.

“She found documents. She planned to confront him.””

Denise immediately opened the folder.

“Wait.””

She flipped through the papers.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“There’s a missing section.””

Daniel frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

Denise turned the folder around.

“Someone removed pages.””

I looked at Daniel.

He took a step back.

“You think I did that?””

“I think someone has been hiding things.””

Rachel spoke again.

“Marcus, you need to know something else.””

“What?””

“The woman you almost married…”

I looked at Vanessa.

Rachel’s voice lowered.

“She knew your wife was investigating.””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

I stared at her.

“Is that true?””

She didn’t answer.

“Vanessa.””

Her shoulders shook.

“I didn’t know everything.””

That sentence.

That terrible sentence.

Not a denial.

Not innocence.

Just another half-truth.

“You knew enough.””

She looked at me.

“I was scared.””

“Of what?””

She whispered:

“Of losing the life I was promised.””

I felt something break inside me.

Not love.

That had already shattered.

Trust.

I turned away.

Lily suddenly pulled my sleeve.

“Dad.””

I looked down.

“Can we please go?””

This time, I didn’t hesitate.

“Yes.””

I took her hand.

But before we left, Rachel spoke one final time.

“Marcus.””

I stopped.

“There’s one more thing.””

I closed my eyes.

“What?””

Her voice became almost a whisper.

“The person who caused the crash…”

A pause.

Then:

“Was not trying to hurt your wife.””

My heart started pounding.

“What does that mean?””

Rachel answered:

“They were trying to hurt you.””

The call ended.

I stood there holding my daughter’s hand.

And for the first time all day…

I was afraid.

May you like

Not because I didn’t know the truth.

Because I was starting to understand how far someone had gone to hide it.
