Chapter 12: The Truth About Lily

I read the sentence again.

Then again.

Because my brain refused to process it.

The truth about Lily’s birth.

My hands went numb.

I looked at Daniel.

“What does this mean?””

He looked away.

“I don’t know everything.””

“You kept this from me.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His voice cracked.

“Because I was afraid.””

I laughed softly.

Another person.

Another fear.

Another excuse.

Everyone had been afraid.

But somehow, I was the one who paid the price.

“What does the letter say?””

Daniel swallowed.

“I only read the first page.””

“Why?””

“Because I knew it would change everything.””

I looked at the envelope.

Then toward Lily.

My daughter.

My entire world.

A thousand thoughts entered my mind.

None of them made sense.

I opened the letter.

The handwriting was old.

My father’s.

The man who always controlled every conversation.

The man who believed emotions made people weak.

The letter began:

“Marcus,

If you are reading this, then I failed to keep this family together.””

I continued.

“Some truths destroy people when they are revealed too early.””

My heart pounded.

Then:

“Lily was born into a family built on secrets.””

I stopped.

I couldn’t continue.

Not there.

Not with Lily nearby.

I folded the letter.

Daniel watched me.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“I need the whole truth.””

He nodded.

“I know.””

“Why now?””

His eyes filled.

“Because seeing Lily today…”

He looked down.

“I realized I became the person I hated.””

The honesty surprised me.

But it didn’t erase anything.

“I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“Did you ever believe Lily was dangerous?””

Daniel closed his eyes.

“No.””

The answer came immediately.

“I never hated her.””

“Then why?””

“Because I hated what happened after your wife died.””

I waited.

Daniel continued.

“You stopped living.””

I looked away.

“I was grieving.””

“I know.””

His voice broke.

“But everyone around you moved forward except you.””

“That wasn’t Lily’s fault.””

“I know that now.””

The room went quiet.

Then Lily walked in.

“Dad?””

I immediately hid the letter.

But she noticed.

“What is it?””

I smiled gently.

“Nothing you need to worry about.””

She studied my face.

She was too young to understand the details.

But old enough to understand fear.

“Are you mad at me?””

The question destroyed me.

I knelt.

“No.””

“Even after everything?””

“Especially after everything.””

She hugged me.

And I held her tightly.

Because whatever secret existed…

Whatever truth was coming…

Nothing would change that.

Later that evening, Denise returned with more information.

She placed a file on the table.

“I found Lily’s original birth records.””

I looked at her.

“Why?””

She hesitated.

“Because your father’s letter made me suspicious.””

I opened the file.

The first page looked normal.

Then I saw the second.

My name.

My wife’s name.

And another name.

A name I didn’t recognize.

“Who is this?””

Denise looked at me.

“That’s what I was trying to find out.””

I stared at the document.

There was a section marked:

“Biological information.””

My hands shook.

“Marcus…”

I looked up.

“What?””

Denise took a breath.

“There’s something you need to know.””

The room felt smaller.

“What?””

She pointed to the page.

“Your wife never listed a father.””

I frowned.

“What?””

“She left it blank.””

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Denise shook her head.

“It gets more complicated.””

“How?””

She looked toward Lily’s room.

Then back at me.

“The person listed as the emergency contact…”

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

Denise slowly answered:

“Daniel.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

She handed me another document.

A document signed years ago.

A document I had never seen.

And at the bottom was a signature.

My brother’s.

I stared at the name.

Because suddenly every lie, every secret, every betrayal…

Led back to one question.

May you like

A question I wasn’t ready to ask.

Was Lily really my daughter?
