Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Smile
The name on Vanessa’s phone stayed glowing for only a few seconds.
But it was enough.
Enough for me to see the panic in her eyes.
Enough for me to know this wasn’t a misunderstanding.
This wasn’t my daughter being confused.
Something was happening behind my back.
“Marcus,” Vanessa said quickly, stepping toward the table.
“Don’t do this.””
I looked at her.
“Don’t do what?””
“Don’t turn one emotional moment into something bigger.””
I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“My daughter is crying in front of everyone because of something you said.””
Vanessa looked around at the guests.
Her expression changed instantly.
The same expression she used whenever she needed people to believe she was the victim.
“I have been preparing for this wedding for months,” she said loudly.
“I have done everything for this family.””
I stared at her.
Family.
That word felt different now.
Because real family didn’t make children feel like they were disposable.
Lily stayed behind me, holding onto my hand.
“Dad,” she whispered.
I looked down.
“Are we still getting married?””
The question broke something inside me.
Because she wasn’t asking about the ceremony.
She wasn’t asking about the flowers or the guests.
She was asking if her life was about to change.
I crouched beside her.
“Nothing is more important than you.””
Lily nodded, but she still looked afraid.
Vanessa watched us.
And for the first time since I met her, I didn’t recognize her.
The woman who used to bring Lily hot chocolate on rainy mornings.
The woman who used to braid Lily’s hair before school.
The woman who told me, “I want to be the mother she deserves.””
Where did that person go?
Or maybe she was never real.
“Marcus,” Vanessa said.
I stood.
“What?””
“We need to talk privately.””
“No.””
Her eyebrows lifted.
“No?””
“Not anymore.””
The guests grew quieter.
I could feel the embarrassment she feared moving away from her and toward the truth.
“You embarrassed me in front of everyone,” she said.
I shook my head.
“You hurt my daughter in front of everyone.””
“That is not fair.””
“Fair?””
My voice became sharper.
“You pushed an eight-year-old girl onto a stone aisle and your concern is fairness?””
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“She was being difficult.””
Lily flinched.
That one reaction told me everything.
Children don’t react that way to harmless words.
They react that way when they have heard them before.
I turned to Lily.
“How long has this been happening?””
She looked down.
“Lily.””
She squeezed my hand.
“Since last week.””
My chest tightened.
“Last week?””
Vanessa immediately interrupted.
“She’s exaggerating.””
I ignored her.
“What happened last week?””
Lily hesitated.
Then she said quietly, “She told me I was making your life harder.””
I closed my eyes for a second.
The sounds around me disappeared.
The music.
The guests.
The wedding.
Everything.
“She told me you were happier before you had to worry about me.””
Vanessa’s face went pale.
“Marcus, that is not what I meant.””
I looked at her.
“You said that to her?””
“I was frustrated.””
“She’s a child.””
“She needs to understand reality.””
I stared at Vanessa.
“No. She needs to feel loved.””
The security guard moved closer.
“Sir, do you want me to remove anyone from the ceremony area?””
Vanessa immediately looked offended.
“Remove me?””
Nobody answered.
Because everyone understood.
She had put herself there.
Vanessa took a step toward me.
“Marcus, you’re making a mistake.””
“A mistake?””
“Yes.””
Her voice lowered.
“You don’t know everything.””
I studied her face.
“What don’t I know?””
For a moment, she looked like she might tell me.
Then she stopped.
That scared me more than anything.
Because Vanessa wasn’t someone who stayed quiet.
She stayed quiet when she was hiding something.
A breeze moved through the wedding decorations.
The white flowers above us swayed gently.
A place that was supposed to represent a new beginning suddenly felt like a courtroom.
Then Vanessa’s phone buzzed again.
This time, she grabbed it before anyone could see.
But she was too late.
I saw the message preview.
Three words.
“Is she gone?””
My blood turned cold.
I looked at Vanessa.
“Who is asking if my daughter is gone?””
She didn’t answer.
“Vanessa.””
Her hands tightened around the phone.
The crowd waited.
Lily held my arm.
And then Vanessa whispered something that changed everything.
“Marcus…”
Her voice shook.
“You need to understand why I did this.””
I stared at her.
“Then tell me.””
She looked toward the guests.
Then toward Lily.
Then back at me.
And finally she said the one sentence I never expected to hear on my wedding day.
“I wasn’t trying to get rid of Lily…”
May you like
She paused.
“I was trying to protect you from what she knows.””
