Chapter 6: The Message That Changed Everything

The sentence should have frightened me.

But strangely, it didn’t.

Because fear had already left.

There was only clarity.

Someone else knew.

Someone else was involved.

And Vanessa had not been acting alone.

“Who knows?”” I asked.

Vanessa looked toward the exit.

For a second, I thought she might run.

“Vanessa.””

She looked back.

“Answer me.””

Her lips parted.

“I can’t.””

That was enough.

I handed the folder to Denise.

Then I stepped closer.

“You can’t?””

She shook her head.

“If I tell you—”

“What?””

Her eyes filled with panic.

“You’ll understand why I did this.””

I stared at her.

“No explanation will make hurting my daughter acceptable.””

The words hit her.

But before she could respond, Lily spoke.

“Dad?””

I turned.

“Yes?””

“Can we go home?””

That question broke my heart.

Because she wasn’t asking to stay at the wedding.

She wasn’t asking about the guests.

She wasn’t asking about the expensive decorations.

She just wanted safety.

I bent down.

“Yes, baby.””

Vanessa looked shocked.

“You’re leaving?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

“But the ceremony—”

I looked at the flowers.

The chairs.

The aisle where my daughter had fallen.

“The ceremony ended the moment you hurt her.””

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“You’re throwing away everything we built?””

I looked at Lily.

“No.””

I looked back at Vanessa.

“I’m protecting the only thing that matters.””

The security guard stepped forward.

“Sir, I’ll walk you out.””

But before we moved, Denise spoke.

“Marcus.””

I stopped.

She held the folder.

“You need to see the last page.””

I looked at her.

“What is it?””

She hesitated.

“The reason Vanessa was so desperate.””

I didn’t want to know.

Part of me already knew enough.

But another part needed the truth.

I walked back.

Denise opened the folder.

The final page was different.

It wasn’t a plan.

It was a letter.

I read the first line.

And my stomach dropped.

Because it wasn’t written by Vanessa.

It was written by someone else.

Someone who had been influencing her.

Someone who knew my family.

Someone who had a reason to destroy us.

“Marcus?””

I looked up.

Vanessa was watching me.

She looked defeated.

Not angry.

Not confident.

Defeated.

“Who is this?”” I asked.

Nobody answered.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Who wrote this?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I didn’t want you to find out this way.””

“That’s not an answer.””

She looked at Lily.

Then back at me.

Finally, she whispered:

“Your brother.””

The words hit me like a punch.

My brother.

The man who had hugged Lily at every family gathering.

The man who told me he supported my happiness.

The man who stood beside me when I proposed to Vanessa.

“No.””

Vanessa nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

I felt the ground shift beneath me.

“Why?””

Her voice trembled.

“Because he believes Lily is the reason your life changed.””

I looked down at the paper again.

The handwriting.

The instructions.

The lies.

Suddenly, everything felt bigger than Vanessa.

Much bigger.

A shadow moved near the entrance of the venue.

Someone standing just outside the crowd.

Watching.

Waiting.

Then the person stepped forward.

And Lily immediately grabbed my hand.

“Dad…”

I looked up.

My heart stopped.

Because the person walking toward us was the last person I expected to see.

May you like

My brother.

And he was smiling.
