Vanessa Cross had not appeared after Emily’s accident.
She had been in their lives for years.
Emily met her first.
They served together on the board of a children’s literacy nonprofit.
Vanessa came to dinners.
Birthday parties.
Holiday fundraisers.
She knew Lily.
Lily once called her Aunt Vanessa.
Ryan trusted her because Emily did.
Then, eighteen months before the accident, Emily and Vanessa stopped appearing together socially.
