Chapter 5 - RYAN’S LIE HAD STARTED AS A BAD DECISION AND BECOME A SYSTEMRyan was interviewed by child-protection staff.
They asked:
“When did you first tell Lily her mother was dead?”
He looked down.
“About seven months ago.”
“Why?”
He answered:
“She kept asking when Emily was coming home.”
“And?”
“At the time, Emily was extremely impaired.”
“Was she expected to die?”
“No.”
“Was she terminal?”
“No.”
“Did a physician recommend telling Lily that?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Ryan cried.
“I couldn’t keep explaining uncertainty.”
There.
Not protection.
Exhaustion.
Cowardice.
He continued.
“Every day Lily asked whether today was the day.”
“So you told her her mother died.”
“Yes.”
“Did you plan to correct that later?”
“At first.”
“When?”
“When Emily improved.”
“Did she?”
“Yes.”
“And did you correct it?”
“No.”
“Why?”
Ryan stared at his hands.
“Because by then Vanessa and I…”
He stopped.
“Were involved?”
“Yes.”
“And telling Lily Emily was alive would complicate that relationship?”
Ryan’s face crumpled.
“Yes.”
That was the ugliest truth.
The lie began as an emotionally overwhelmed father making an indefensible decision.
Then it became convenient.
Convenience turned into maintenance.
He removed Emily’s photographs.
Told school staff not to discuss the accident.
Blocked James after repeated arguments.
Changed Lily’s therapist when she questioned inconsistencies.
He did not start by planning eight months of deception.
He built it one day at a time.
