That became important.
He received a copy through Vanessa.
She told him Emily requested separation.
Ryan was devastated.
Then relieved.
That relief shamed him later.
He did not independently verify.
Why?
Because the document gave him permission to move toward Vanessa.
He wanted it to be true.
The signature was questionable.
The notarization defective.
Emily lacked documented capacity for complex marital agreements on that date.
Her own attorney had never reviewed it.
The family court later treated it as ineffective.
Ryan and Emily remained legally married.
Ryan should have known the divorce had stalled.
His lawyer sent notices.
But Ryan’s executive assistant routed family legal correspondence into a folder Vanessa had access to because she had begun helping coordinate wedding planning and household matters.
Vanessa saw the stay notice.
Did not forward it.
That was why Ryan arrived at his wedding believing he was legally free to marry.
Still partly his responsibility.
He could have confirmed.
