Chapter 12: The Last Person I Expected
The name stayed in my mind.
Repeating.
Again.
And again.
I couldn’t move.
Not because I was shocked.
Because my brain was trying to reject what I had just heard.
“No.””
The word left my mouth before I could stop it.
Daniel looked at me.
“I’m sorry.””
I laughed quietly.
“You’re sorry?””
My voice grew colder.
“Everyone here is sorry.””
I looked around the ballroom.
Vanessa.
Marcus.
Elena.
Daniel.
“So many apologies.””
I shook my head.
“But nobody stopped.””
Nobody.
That was the part I couldn’t understand.
People made mistakes.
People got scared.
People failed.
But everyone had a moment where they could have told me.
And everyone chose silence.
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“You’re right.””
I looked at him.
“I know.””
The doors behind me remained closed.
The entire ballroom felt like it was waiting.
Waiting for one more person.
One more truth.
One more betrayal.
Vanessa stepped closer.
“Adrian.””
I turned.
“What?””
Her voice shook.
“I need you to know something.””
I almost smiled.
“Another secret?””
She looked hurt.
But she knew she deserved it.
“No.””
She swallowed.
“This one is the truth.””
I waited.
She looked at the wheelchair behind me.
Then at me.
“I never wanted you to suffer.””
I said nothing.
“I was selfish.””
A pause.
“I was scared.””
Another pause.
“But I never wanted you broken.””
I looked at her.
“That doesn’t change what you did.””
“I know.””
For once, she didn’t argue.
That surprised me.
Maybe because there was nothing left to defend.
Daniel looked at me.
“The person who caused this will come here.””
I frowned.
“You invited them?””
“No.””
He looked toward the entrance.
“They already know.””
The doors opened.
Again.
But this time, everyone knew.
This was the final person.
The person who had been missing from every conversation.
The person who had allowed everyone else to take the blame.
A woman stepped inside.
Older than Vanessa.
Calm.
Controlled.
And familiar.
My heart stopped.
Because I knew her.
Not from the accident.
Not from the investigation.
From my own life.
“Mom?””
The ballroom went silent.
My mother looked at me.
And tears filled her eyes.
“I’m sorry, Adrian.””
I couldn’t speak.
My mother.
The person who sat beside my hospital bed.
The person who told me everything would be okay.
The person who helped me learn how to walk again.
She had known.
No.
I couldn’t accept it.
“What are you doing here?””
She took a step forward.
“To tell you the truth.””
I stared.
“You knew?””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The pain was immediate.
A different kind of pain.
Because a stranger can betray you.
But your family?
Your family is supposed to be where you go when everyone else leaves.
“Why?””
Her tears fell.
“Because I thought I was protecting you.””
I looked away.
That phrase again.
The same excuse.
The same shield.
Everyone used it.
Everyone hid behind it.
“No.””
My voice shook.
“You don’t get to say that.””
She stopped.
“I spent a year believing I lost my wife because I became disabled.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“I spent a year believing I wasn’t enough.””
Then I looked back at my mother.
“And you knew the truth?””
She whispered:
“Yes.””
“Why?””
She took a breath.
“Because before the accident…”
She stopped.
The entire room waited.
“Before the accident, I found out Vanessa was planning to leave you.””
I looked at Vanessa.
She lowered her head.
My mother continued.
“And I found out something else.””
My chest tightened.
“What?””
She looked directly at me.
“The reason she was planning to leave.””
Silence.
Vanessa whispered:
“Please don’t.””
My mother ignored her.
“She wasn’t leaving because she stopped loving you.””
I froze.
“Then why?””
My mother’s voice broke.
“Because someone had been forcing her to.””
The room went completely silent.
I looked at Vanessa.
Then Marcus.
Then Daniel.
“What?””
My mother took another step.
“Adrian…”
She whispered:
“Your accident wasn’t the beginning of the betrayal.””
A pause.
“It was the result of one.””
And then she said the sentence that changed everything:
“The person who destroyed your life wasn’t trying to hurt you.””
She looked at me.
“They were trying to get rid of someone else.””
My blood ran cold.
“Who?””
My mother looked toward Vanessa.
May you like
And Vanessa whispered the answer:
“Me.””
