Chapter 8: The Woman Who Chose Silence
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Not because I didn’t understand.
Because I understood too quickly.
My mind began connecting pieces I had ignored.
The strange phone call Vanessa received that night.
The argument we had before I left.
The way she insisted I take a different route home.
The way she avoided talking about it afterward.
All those small details I had buried because accepting them was too painful.
Now they were standing in front of me.
Wearing a silver gown.
Crying.
And finally telling the truth.
“You were the reason?””
My voice barely sounded like mine.
Vanessa wiped her tears.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
I stepped back.
“Answer the question.””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The word landed harder than anything Marcus had said.
Harder than the humiliation.
Harder than being abandoned.
Because betrayal from strangers hurts.
But betrayal from someone you love changes the way you see the entire world.
Marcus stared at Vanessa.
“What did you do?””
She looked at him.
“I didn’t mean for it to happen.””
I laughed once.
A quiet, broken sound.
“That’s your defense?””
“No.””
She shook her head quickly.
“No, I swear.””
I looked at Elena.
“Tell me.””
Elena took a deep breath.
“The night of the accident, Vanessa contacted Adrian.””
I looked at her.
“Yes.””
“She asked him to meet her.””
I nodded slowly.
“That’s true.””
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“I needed to talk to you.””
“About what?””
She didn’t answer.
I already knew.
“About leaving.””
Her silence confirmed it.
Elena continued.
“She was supposed to meet Adrian at a restaurant.””
“Yes.””
“But before he arrived, she called again.””
My eyes moved to Vanessa.
“Why?””
Her voice was small.
“Because I changed my mind.””
I stared.
“You changed your mind?””
She nodded.
“I wanted to fix things.””
The anger inside me shifted.
Not disappeared.
Shifted.
“Then what happened?””
She looked away.
“I saw Marcus.””
The room went silent.
Marcus froze.
“What?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I saw you that night.””
His face changed.
“I wasn’t involved.””
“I know.””
“Then why are you saying my name?””
“Because that’s when everything changed.””
I looked between them.
The pieces were coming together.
Marcus had been there.
Vanessa had been there.
And neither had told me.
Elena spoke carefully.
“Vanessa left the meeting location before Adrian arrived.””
“Why?””
She looked at me.
“Because I saw Marcus.””
I turned toward him.
“Why?””
Marcus looked uncomfortable.
“I was checking on her.””
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“No.””
Her voice was cold.
“You were following me.””
Everyone stared at him.
Marcus shook his head.
“That’s not true.””
“You thought I was going to leave you.””
His face changed.
Because that was the first time he looked guilty.
Not confused.
Guilty.
Vanessa continued.
“You followed me because you thought Adrian and I were fixing things.””
Marcus said nothing.
I looked at him.
“And then?””
Vanessa looked down.
“Then Adrian left.””
The silence was unbearable.
Elena continued.
“The investigation found evidence that Adrian’s car was forced into a dangerous situation.””
My hands tightened.
“Who did it?””
Nobody answered.
Then Vanessa whispered:
“I don’t know.””
I looked at her.
“You don’t know?””
“No.””
Her eyes filled.
“But I know I should have told you.””
“Yes.””
The agreement surprised her.
I nodded.
“You should have.””
She looked like she wanted forgiveness.
But forgiveness wasn’t something she could ask for.
Not yet.
Marcus suddenly stepped forward.
“You’re blaming me?””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I’m saying you were there.””
“So were you.””
The words cut through the room.
Vanessa went silent.
Because they were true.
Marcus looked at me.
“Adrian, listen.””
I looked at him.
“I’m not the one who lied to you.””
“No.””
I nodded.
“You’re not.””
A pause.
“But you’re also not innocent.””
His face tightened.
Before he could answer, Elena reached into her bag again.
Another document.
This time, her expression was different.
More serious.
“There’s something else.””
I looked at her.
“What?””
She hesitated.
“The accident wasn’t the only thing hidden from you.””
My stomach dropped.
Vanessa whispered:
“Elena…”
But Elena continued.
“After the accident, someone attempted to access Adrian’s medical records.””
Everyone froze.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked terrified.
“Why?””
Elena looked at her.
“Because someone wanted to know if Adrian would ever recover.””
The room went silent.
Marcus slowly turned toward Vanessa.
“No…”
I stared at the woman I once planned to grow old with.
“Who wanted to know?””
Elena looked directly at me.
May you like
And the answer changed everything.
“Vanessa did.””
