Chapter 14: The Final Betrayal

The room turned toward the person Marcus had accused.

Nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

Because the accusation was impossible.

I stared.

“No.””

Marcus looked at me.

“I wish I was wrong.””

The person stood frozen.

The person who had always been there.

The person everyone trusted.

My closest friend.

James.

He looked around the ballroom.

Then laughed softly.

Not nervously.

Not fearfully.

Almost sadly.

“So this is how it happens.””

I stared at him.

“How what happens?””

He looked at me.

“How everyone finally decides I’m the villain.””

My jaw tightened.

“Are you?””

Silence.

That was all I needed.

James looked away.

Vanessa whispered:

“James…”

He looked at her.

“You knew too.””

She shook her head.

“No.””

“You suspected.””

She didn’t answer.

I looked at both of them.

“How long?””

James sighed.

“Longer than you know.””

My chest tightened.

I remembered every moment.

James visiting me in the hospital.

James helping me after the accident.

James telling me I needed to move forward.

Was all of it fake?

“Why?””

The question came quietly.

James looked at me.

“Because I was tired of watching you win.””

The words shocked everyone.

I stared.

“What?””

He laughed.

“You had everything.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You thought that?””

“Yes.””

His voice became bitter.

“You had the company. The marriage. The respect.””

I shook my head.

“So you tried to take it?””

He looked down.

“I didn’t plan the accident.””

Nobody breathed.

“But you helped create the situation.””

The words came from Elena.

James looked at her.

“You don’t know anything.””

“I know enough.””

She held up a folder.

“The investigation found that the person who accessed Adrian’s records used your credentials.””

The room exploded.

I looked at James.

“My records?””

He closed his eyes.

“Yes.””

“Why?””

His answer was quiet.

“Because I needed to know if you would recover.””

The pain was immediate.

The same question Vanessa had asked.

The same cruelty.

Everyone wanted to know if I would stand again.

Nobody cared how hard it was to fall.

I looked at him.

“You wanted me to stay broken.””

James shook his head.

“No.””

“Then what?””

He looked at me.

“I wanted you to disappear.””

The words were brutal.

Honest.

And somehow worse than another lie.

Marcus looked disgusted.

“You’re insane.””

James laughed.

“You think you’re different?””

Marcus froze.

James looked at him.

“You used Vanessa.””

Marcus’s expression changed.

“You don’t get to judge me.””

“No.””

James smiled.

“But I know exactly what you are.””

The ballroom was silent.

I looked at James.

“Why Vanessa?””

His expression changed.

Because that answer mattered.

“She knew too much.””

Vanessa stepped back.

“I knew you were involved.””

James nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why didn’t you stop me?””

His smile disappeared.

“Because you were useful.””

The words hurt her.

I saw it.

Even after everything, hearing that still broke something in her.

James continued.

“You were angry at Adrian. You were vulnerable.””

Vanessa whispered:

“You used me.””

“Yes.””

No hesitation.

No apology.

Just truth.

I looked at him.

“You ruined my life because you were jealous.””

James stared.

“No.””

He stepped closer.

“I ruined your life because I believed you didn’t deserve it.””

The room went quiet.

That sentence revealed everything.

Not revenge.

Not anger.

Envy.

A person who couldn’t stand watching someone else have what they wanted.

I shook my head.

“You know what’s the saddest part?””

James looked at me.

“I spent a year learning how to stand again.””

I looked at the wheelchair.

“And you spent a year proving you never could.””

His face changed.

Because that hurt.

The doors opened.

This time, nobody was surprised.

Police officers entered.

James looked toward them.

His confidence finally disappeared.

Elena stepped forward.

“The evidence has been turned over.””

James looked at me.

“You’re really doing this?””

I stared.

“You did this.””

He laughed bitterly.

“You think this makes you better?””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“It makes me free.””

For the first time all night, I felt it.

Not victory.

Not revenge.

Freedom.

James was escorted away.

Vanessa watched silently.

Marcus lowered his head.

My mother cried.

And I stood there.

Not because I wanted them to see.

Because I finally wanted to see myself.

Then Vanessa walked toward me.

“Adrian.””

I turned.

She stopped a few feet away.

“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.””

I said nothing.

“But I need to say one thing.””

I waited.

She looked at the wheelchair.

Then at me.

“I was wrong.””

The simplest words.

May you like

The hardest ones.

And somehow, they were the first honest words she had given me.
