Chapter 6: The Witness From My Past
The ballroom doors opened wider.
And everyone turned.
I didn’t.
Not immediately.
Because some part of me already knew.
Some memories don’t disappear.
They wait.
The person standing at the entrance was someone I had spent a year trying to forget.
Someone connected to the worst night of my life.
Someone who could answer the questions I never got answers to.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Not surprised.
Terrified.
That told me everything.
The person walked slowly into the ballroom.
The guests moved aside.
Nobody spoke.
Nobody wanted to miss what happened next.
I stared.
“How?””
The person stopped several feet away.
“I heard you were finally ready to know.””
My hands tightened.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“You shouldn’t be here.””
The person looked at her.
“That’s interesting.””
A pause.
“Because you’re the reason I wasn’t here before.””
Marcus looked confused.
“What is going on?””
Nobody answered him.
I looked between them.
“You two know each other.””
Vanessa didn’t speak.
The person nodded.
“Yes.””
My stomach tightened.
“How?””
They looked at me.
“Because I was there the night everything changed.””
The ballroom disappeared for a moment.
Not literally.
But mentally.
I was back in that hospital room.
The machines.
The pain.
The confusion.
The endless questions.
I remembered waking up and hearing everyone tell me it was an accident.
But something about that night never felt right.
I had always known.
Something was missing.
I just never knew what.
Until now.
Vanessa saw my expression.
“Adrian…”
I looked at her.
“Were you there?””
She looked away.
That was enough.
My voice became quieter.
“Were you there?””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
The guests gasped softly.
Marcus looked at her.
“You told me you weren’t.””
She ignored him.
I stared at Vanessa.
“You let me believe you weren’t there.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
I almost smiled.
“Protect me?””
She stepped closer.
“Yes.””
“By lying?””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I didn’t know what else to do.””
The person beside me shook their head.
“You knew exactly what to do.””
Vanessa looked angry now.
“Stay out of this.””
“No.””
Their voice was firm.
“Not anymore.””
I looked at them.
“What happened that night?””
Silence.
The kind that comes before a storm.
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Adrian…”
“No.””
My voice cut through the room.
“I spent a year wondering why my life changed.””
I stepped closer.
“I spent a year wondering why the person I loved disappeared.””
Another step.
“And you knew?””
She looked down.
“Yes.””
The answer hurt more than I expected.
Not because she knew.
Because she admitted it so easily.
Marcus shook his head.
“I don’t understand.””
I looked at him.
“Neither did I.””
The person beside me reached into their bag.
Not dramatically.
Not like a movie.
Just calmly.
They pulled out another envelope.
Vanessa immediately reacted.
“No.””
Everyone heard it.
The fear.
The panic.
The desperation.
I looked at the envelope.
Then at her.
“What is that?””
She didn’t answer.
The person held it out.
“The reason she left you.””
My chest tightened.
I took it.
Vanessa whispered:
“Adrian, don’t open that.””
I looked at her.
“Why?””
She had no answer.
Because there was only one reason someone begged you not to see the truth.
They were afraid of what you would find.
I opened the envelope.
The first page was a single document.
I read the first line.
And everything inside me went cold.
Because the truth wasn’t about my recovery.
It wasn’t about the wheelchair.
It wasn’t even about Vanessa leaving.
It was about something that happened before the accident.
Something she had hidden from me for years.
I looked up.
Vanessa was crying now.
Not because she felt sorry.
Because she knew.
May you like
The truth had finally arrived.
And there was nowhere left for her to hide.
