Chapter 9: The Question Nobody Could Answer

The ballroom erupted.

Not with shouting.

Not with chaos.

With whispers.

Hundreds of quiet voices crashing together.

People who had come to celebrate were now watching a marriage fall apart.

Vanessa stood completely still.

I looked at her.

Waiting.

Waiting for the denial.

The excuse.

The explanation.

Anything.

But she said nothing.

That was worse.

“Is it true?””

My voice was quiet.

She looked at me.

“Adrian…”

“Is it true?””

Her shoulders dropped.

“Yes.””

The honesty almost hurt more.

Because lies would have been easier.

I could fight lies.

But the truth?

The truth had nowhere to hide.

Marcus looked at her.

“You checked his medical records?””

Vanessa nodded.

“I was worried.””

Marcus stared.

“Worried?””

“Yes.””

“You wanted to know if he would walk again.””

She looked away.

I saw it.

The shame.

Finally.

After all this time.

“You wanted to know if I was worth coming back to.””

Her eyes filled.

“No.””

I shook my head.

“That’s exactly what you wanted to know.””

She stepped closer.

“I was confused.””

“No.””

I stepped back.

“You were calculating.””

The word hurt her.

Good.

Because I had spent a year carrying the pain alone.

Vanessa lowered her voice.

“I was scared.””

I looked at her.

“You keep saying that.””

“Because it’s true.””

“Fear explains a mistake.””

I paused.

“It doesn’t explain a choice.””

She had no answer.

Marcus looked at the floor.

Everything he believed about Vanessa was collapsing.

I almost felt sorry for him.

Almost.

Because he had chosen to stand beside someone without knowing the whole truth.

But I had lived it.

I knew better.

Elena moved closer.

“There’s something you need to understand.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

“Vanessa wasn’t the only person hiding information.””

My eyes narrowed.

“Who else?””

Elena looked toward Marcus.

His face changed.

“No.””

Everyone noticed.

Marcus stepped back.

“No, don’t do that.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

He looked at Elena.

“You know nothing.””

Elena’s expression stayed calm.

“I know enough.””

Marcus laughed nervously.

“You’re trying to destroy me.””

“No.””

She shook her head.

“I’m trying to stop you from rewriting what happened.””

I looked at Marcus.

“What happened?””

He didn’t answer.

That was becoming a pattern.

People only stayed silent when the truth was dangerous.

I walked closer.

“Marcus.””

He looked at me.

“Tell me.””

His jaw tightened.

For a moment, I saw something behind the arrogance.

Regret.

Then anger.

“You think you’re better than me now?””

I frowned.

“What?””

“You’re standing there like you won.””

I looked around.

At the room.

At Vanessa.

At the wheelchair behind me.

“I didn’t win anything.””

My voice softened.

“I lost a year.””

That hit him.

Because it was true.

Revenge wasn’t bringing back the days I spent wondering why I wasn’t enough.

It wasn’t bringing back the trust I gave away.

It wasn’t changing who Vanessa had become.

Marcus looked away.

“I didn’t cause the accident.””

I watched him carefully.

“I didn’t say you did.””

He looked surprised.

“Then why are you looking at me like that?””

“Because you know something.””

Silence.

Elena spoke.

“Marcus was the person who found the vehicle first.””

My eyes moved.

“You found me?””

Marcus didn’t answer.

“You were there before the ambulance?””

He nodded slowly.

“Yes.””

“Why didn’t you tell anyone?””

His face changed.

“I panicked.””

“About what?””

He looked at Vanessa.

And that answer told me everything.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Marcus…”

I looked at her.

“What happened?””

She whispered:

“He promised he would handle it.””

The words felt like ice.

“Handle what?””

Nobody spoke.

Then Marcus finally broke.

“I thought I was protecting myself.””

The ballroom went silent.

I stared at him.

“From what?””

He looked at me.

And said the one thing I never expected.

“From you finding out that Vanessa wasn’t the only person who betrayed you.””

My heart stopped.

I looked at Vanessa.

Then Marcus.

Then Elena.

“Who else?””

Marcus swallowed.

And before he could answer, the ballroom doors opened again.

This time, nobody looked surprised.

Because everyone already knew.

The truth had more layers.

And someone else had just arrived to tear away the final one.
