Chapter 4 - VANESSA SAID SHE WANTED TO WIN AGAINST A DEAD WOMAN

Vanessa eventually gave a statement.

Not immediately.

Months later, through plea discussions.

She admitted hurting Lily’s wrist.

Admitted tearing photograph.

Admitted falsifying behavioral context.

Admitted planning residential intake without my informed consent.

Admitted forging my signature.

Why?

Her first answer:

“I was jealous.”

Of Emma.

A dead woman.

She said:

“Every room had her.”

Not literally.

I had put many photos away.

But Lily talked about her.

My mother talked about her.

I sometimes compared.

That part was mine.

Once I told Vanessa:

“Emma would know what to do when Lily gets like this.”

Cruel.

I had apologized then.

But damage.

Vanessa said:

“I always felt like replacement who could never be promoted.”

Then Adrian told her:

“She should have formal authority if she was doing work.”

That resonated.

Then money.

Yes.

She wanted compensation?

Not initially.

Later, it became proof of status.

“If trust recognized me, I was real family.”

Distorted.

Then Lily’s refusal.

Every time Lily said:

“You’re not Mommy,”

Vanessa heard rejection.

Then she began trying to force emotional transition.

Not title necessarily.

But removal of Emma references.

Then wedding.

Vanessa believed once married she should become “the mother in home.”

Lily wanted Emma’s photo at ceremony.

Vanessa snapped.

Then physical.

Then camera.

Then I came.

I asked through legal setting:

“Did you ever intend to physically hurt Lily beyond grabbing her?”

“No.”

“Did you intend to send her away?”

“Yes.”

“How long?”

“At first eight weeks.”

“And after?”

“I hoped longer.”

Why?

“Because I wanted time with you without everything revolving around her grief.”

There.

Ugly.

Human.

Then:

“Did you love Lily?”

Vanessa cried.

“Yes.”

“How?”

“I don’t know anymore.”

Better than easy claim.

Then:

“Did Adrian make you do it?”

“No.”

Important.

“He gave me language and structure. I made choices.”

Good.

Then charges.

Child endangerment/assault-related offense for wrist injury.

Attempted fraud.

Forgery.

Conspiracy.

No attempted kidnapping/murder.

Meaningful sentence/probation/restitution.

No unsupervised contact with Lily.

No fiduciary roles involving minors.

Then Adrian.

Financial fraud/forgery use/conspiracy/professional misconduct.

Disbarred.

Stronger financial sanctions.

Restitution.

Then Harrow Ridge returned deposits? There was a $12,000 evaluation hold from marital funds. Returned.

Trust itself had not lost principal.

Good.

Then media.

Headline:

BILLIONAIRE CANCELS WEDDING AFTER BRIDE ATTACKS HEIRESS.

I hated word heiress.

Lily was six.

I released one statement:

“My daughter’s financial status is irrelevant to whether she deserved safety.”

May you like

Then nothing else.

No monetizing scandal.
