Chapter 9 - THE CAMERA CAME DOWN

Twenty years after bridal suite, hotel renovated.
We happened to attend conference there.
The old bridal floor had changed.
Lily, now twenty-six, wanted see.
We walked past suite.
Different door.
Different mirrors.
No visible camera.
She laughed.
“This is where wedding died?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
I stared.
She nudged.
“Dad.”
“What?”
“You still look guilty.”
“I am.”
“About what?”
“Not protecting sooner.”
She stopped.
“You did fail some things.”
I nodded.
Then:
“But you don’t need me to make you innocent.”
That sentence.
Emma could have written.
Then:
“You changed.”
Enough.
Then we talked about Vanessa.
Lily had no ongoing relationship beyond occasional letter.
She did not hate.
No need.
Then she said:
“I’m glad you didn’t marry her.”
I laughed.
“Strong endorsement.”
Then:
“But I’m also glad I don’t have to spend life thinking about her.”
That was closure.
The scandal became background.
Then we left.
No plaque.

No pilgrimage.
Just hotel.
