Chapter 6 - LILY ASKED IF VANESSA WAS HER MOTHER

At nine, Lily asked.
“Was Vanessa my mom?”
I said:
“She was your stepmother-to-be. We weren’t married.”
Then:
“But I called her Mom sometimes.”
“Yes.”
“Was that bad?”
“No.”
Important.
“You were allowed to care about her.”
Then:
“Does Mommy Emma get mad?”
“No.”
I smiled.
“She loved you. Love isn’t a contest.”
Then Lily said:
“Vanessa made it one.”
Yes.
Then she asked:
“Did Vanessa love me?”
I answered carefully.
“I think she cared about you sometimes.”
Then:
“But care does not excuse unsafe choices.”
Good.
Then first apology letter from Vanessa.
Therapist reviewed.
Lily, I am sorry I tore your mother’s photograph.
I am sorry I grabbed your wrist.
I am sorry I tried to make your grief look like a sickness because I wanted more control.
Specific.
Then:
You did not owe me the role I wanted.
Then:
I should never have made you smaller so I could feel more important.
Lily listened.
No reply.
At twelve, she wrote:
I forgive the photo a little. I don’t forgive the school plan.
Vanessa replied:
That is okay.
No pressure.
Then at fifteen, Lily chose mediated meeting.
Vanessa asked before hug.
Lily said no.
Vanessa accepted.
Then questions.
“Did you want me gone because of money?”
“Money became part of it.”
“What was first?”
“Jealousy.”
“Of Mom?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because she mattered to you in a way I could not control.”
Then:
“Did you think marrying Dad made you my mother?”
“I thought it should.”
“Why?”
“I was wrong.”
Good.
Then:
“Did you think I was unstable?”
“No.”
There.
Lily stared.
“So you knew?”
“Yes.”
That was important.
Then:
“Did Adrian know?”
“I think he knew I was exaggerating. I don’t think he knew every time I provoked you.”
Nuance.
Then:
“Would you have let me stay at Harrow Ridge for months?”
“Yes.”
“Even if I cried?”
“Yes.”
Lily looked away.
Then:
“That’s leaving.”
Vanessa cried.
“Yes.”
No defense.

Meeting ended with no hug.
But truth.
