Chapter 9: The Brother Who Betrayed Me
For a few seconds, nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
The only sound in the room was the faint hum of the broken hearing aid in my hand.
Noah’s voice kept repeating in my mind.
*“Uncle Michael said Mommy was never supposed to come back.””*
My brother.
My own brother.
The person who stood beside me at Emily’s funeral.
The person who hugged me when I thought my entire world had ended.
The person who told me I needed to be strong for Noah.
I looked at Emily.
“Are you sure?””
She looked heartbroken.
“I wish I wasn’t.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
The word came out automatically.
Because accepting Mark’s betrayal was one thing.
Accepting Victoria’s was another.
But Michael?
No.
Not him.
“He’s my brother.””
Emily nodded slowly.
“I know.””
“You don’t understand.””
“I do.””
“No, you don’t.””
My voice cracked.
“Michael was the one who helped me survive after you disappeared.””
Emily looked down.
“And that’s why it worked.””
The sentence hit me.
“What?””
She looked at the hearing aid.
“Daniel, people don’t usually betray us by standing far away.””
I stared at her.
“They stand close.””
Nobody spoke.
Because everyone in that room understood.
The worst lies don’t come from strangers.
They come from people who know exactly where to hurt you.
Mark walked toward the table.
“So now you finally see.””
I turned toward him.
“You don’t get to act like you’re helping me.””
He smiled.
“I’m not.””
The honesty surprised me.
“I just want what’s mine.””
“You mean Noah.””
“Yes.””
I stepped forward.
“He is not yours.””
Mark’s expression hardened.
“You keep saying that like repeating it changes biology.””
Emily moved beside me.
“Daniel.””
I looked at her.
“He will use this.””
“I know.””
“No.””
Her eyes were serious.
“He wants you angry.””
I looked at Mark.
“Why?””
“Because angry people make mistakes.””
The room went quiet.
Rachel looked at the flash drive.
“We need to copy the files.””
Victoria nodded.
“If Mark gets this, he can destroy everything.””
I looked at her.
“You said everything was on there.””
She swallowed.
“Yes.””
“What exactly?””
Victoria looked uncomfortable.
“Messages.””
“Between you and Mark?””
“Yes.””
“Proof he forced you?””
She nodded.
“And proof of what I did.””
The honesty surprised me.
I looked at her.
“You’re admitting it?””
She looked at Noah.
“I hurt people.””
Her voice broke.
“But I’m done hiding.””
Emily watched her carefully.
For the first time, there was no anger in her expression.
Only sadness.
“You should have told me.””
Victoria nodded.
“I know.””
“You should have protected Noah.””
“I know.””
The two women looked at each other.
Two people connected by years of secrets.
Two people who had both hurt me.
But in different ways.
My phone buzzed again.
Another message.
*“Five minutes.””*
Then another.
*“Ethan is waiting.””*
My heart dropped.
I grabbed my jacket.
Emily immediately stood.
“No.””
“I have to go.””
“Daniel.””
“If there is even a chance that child is mine—”
“I know.””
Her voice softened.
“That’s why he’s using him.””
I stopped.
She was right.
Mark knew exactly what buttons to press.
My son.
My missing wife.
A child I never met.
He had built the perfect trap.
Rachel stepped forward.
“We don’t go alone.””
Mark laughed.
Everyone looked at him.
“You think I’m going to let you all walk into my trap?””
I stared at him.
“You’re coming with us?””
He smiled.
“No.””
Then he reached into his pocket.
Everyone tensed.
But he didn’t pull out a weapon.
He pulled out his phone.
A video.
He pressed play.
A small boy appeared on the screen.
Four years old.
Sitting on a couch.
Holding a toy airplane.
My breath stopped.
Ethan.
Even without knowing him, I knew.
Something inside me knew.
He looked like Noah.
Not exactly.
But enough.
The same eyes.
The same expression when he was confused.
The same small movement of his hands.
The same child.
“Daddy?””
The little boy’s voice came through the phone.
My knees almost gave out.
Mark watched me.
“Now you understand.””
I stared at the screen.
“Let me talk to him.””
Mark smiled.
“Soon.””
“Please.””
The word surprised everyone.
Even me.
I didn’t care.
That was my son.
Somewhere out there.
Waiting.
Mark lowered the phone.
“You bring me the flash drive.””
“No.””
Emily stepped forward.
“You don’t get to control us anymore.””
Mark looked at her.
“You still think you have power.””
Then his expression changed.
“Tell Daniel what happened the night Ethan was born.””
Emily froze.
I looked at her.
“What?””
She looked away.
“Daniel…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
“What happened?””
Mark smiled.
“She wasn’t alone.””
Emily closed her eyes.
“Mark.””
“Tell him.””
She didn’t.
So he did.
“She had help.””
My stomach tightened.
“From who?””
Mark looked at me.
“Your brother.””
The room went silent again.
I felt like I had been hit.
“No.””
Mark laughed.
“Your brother helped Emily disappear.””
I looked at Emily.
“Is that true?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“Yes.””
I couldn’t speak.
“Why?””
She shook her head.
“Because he thought he was protecting me.””
“From what?””
She looked at Mark.
“From him.””
Mark’s smile disappeared.
Emily continued.
“Michael found out what Mark was planning.””
“Then why didn’t he tell me?””
She whispered:
“Because he made a deal.””
My heart sank.
“What deal?””
“To keep you alive.””
I stared at her.
“What?””
Emily looked at me.
“Michael knew Mark wanted Noah.””
She swallowed.
“He knew Mark would hurt anyone who got in the way.””
“So he helped you hide?””
“Yes.””
“Without telling me?””
She nodded.
“Because Mark threatened him.””
I looked away.
Everything was connected.
Every person.
Every secret.
Every lie.
My phone buzzed again.
This time, it wasn’t a message.
A call.
The screen showed:
*Michael.*
Everyone stared.
Nobody spoke.
I answered.
“Hello?””
Silence.
Then my brother’s voice.
“Daniel.””
My chest tightened.
“Michael.””
“I know you found out.””
My hand curled into a fist.
“You knew?””
A long pause.
“Yes.””
The betrayal hurt more because he didn’t deny it.
“Why?””
His voice cracked.
“Because I made a mistake.””
“You let me think my wife was dead.””
“I was trying to fix it.””
“You had two years.””
“I know.””
“You had two years while I raised Noah alone.””
“I know.””
I closed my eyes.
“Where are you?””
Silence.
Then:
“I’m with Ethan.””
Everyone froze.
Michael continued.
“Daniel, listen carefully.””
His voice was shaking.
“Mark isn’t the only person you should be afraid of.””
My heart raced.
“What does that mean?””
A pause.
Then he whispered:
“Victoria wasn’t sent by Mark.””
I looked at Victoria.
She went pale.
“What?””
Michael continued:
“She was sent by someone else.””
The room became silent.
“Who?””
My brother took a breath.
Then said:
“The person who started all of this.””
The call cut off.
I stared at the screen.
Then everyone heard a sound from outside.
A car door closing.
Emily walked toward the window.
And when she looked outside…
Her face changed.
“Daniel.””
I moved beside her.
A black SUV was parked across the street.
Someone stepped out.
Someone I recognized.
Someone I never expected to see.
May you like
My father.
And he was holding Ethan’s hand.
