Chapter 7: The Name Written On The Paper

The document in Mark’s hand looked small.

Just a few pieces of paper.

A few printed words.

A few lines of ink.

But somehow, it felt heavier than anything I had ever held.

Because Mark wasn’t looking at the paper.

He was looking at me.

Like he already knew what it would do.

“Don’t,” Emily whispered.

Mark smiled.

“Still protecting him after all this time?””

Emily stepped in front of Noah.

“Noah is not yours.””

Mark tilted his head.

“That’s where you’re wrong.””

My eyes stayed on the document.

“Give it to me.””

Mark laughed softly.

“Daniel, you always were too trusting.””

The anger inside me burned.

“You broke into my house.””

“I came to collect my son.””

“He is not your son.””

Mark’s smile disappeared.

“Open your eyes.””

He held up the document.

“This proves everything.””

Rachel moved closer.

“Daniel, don’t take anything from him.””

Mark looked at her.

“You’re still cleaning up Emily’s mess?””

Rachel’s face hardened.

“You don’t get to say her name.””

He laughed.

“You have no idea how much of this is her fault.””

Emily’s voice shook.

“Stop lying.””

Mark looked at her.

“You really want to do this?””

She didn’t answer.

That was when I noticed something.

Emily wasn’t afraid of Mark just because he was dangerous.

She was afraid because he knew something.

Something she didn’t want me to hear.

I stepped forward.

“Give me the paper.””

Mark looked at me.

“You want the truth?””

“Yes.””

He walked slowly toward the table.

Everyone watched him.

Nobody moved.

Not because we trusted him.

Because we knew one wrong move could change everything.

He placed the document down.

“Read it.””

I picked it up.

My eyes moved across the page.

Name.

Date of birth.

Hospital.

Mother.

Then my eyes stopped.

Father.

The room became silent.

Because the name written there was not mine.

It wasn’t Daniel Carter.

It was:

*Mark Anderson.*

I looked at Emily.

She looked devastated.

“Tell me this is fake.””

She opened her mouth.

Nothing came out.

My chest tightened.

“Emily.””

She looked at me.

“Daniel…”

“Tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“I can explain.””

The words felt like a knife.

Not again.

Not another explanation.

Not another secret.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“I need the truth.””

Mark crossed his arms.

“There it is.””

I looked at him.

“Shut up.””

He smiled.

“You spent years raising a child who you thought was yours.””

“Shut up.””

“But the truth is—”

“I said shut up.””

My voice echoed through the room.

Noah covered his ears.

I immediately lowered my voice.

“Sorry, buddy.””

I knelt beside him.

Emily watched me.

Pain filled her face.

Because she knew exactly what I was feeling.

Betrayal.

Confusion.

Fear.

I looked at her.

“Is he right?””

A long silence.

Then Emily whispered:

“No.””

Mark’s smile faded.

“No?””

Emily stood straighter.

“No.””

She looked directly at him.

“You forged it.””

Mark laughed.

“You expect him to believe you?””

I looked at Rachel.

“Can it be fake?””

Rachel took the paper carefully.

She studied it.

After several seconds, she frowned.

“This isn’t an official copy.””

Mark’s expression changed slightly.

“It’s a certified record.””

“No.””

Rachel pointed at the bottom.

“The hospital seal is wrong.””

Mark’s smile disappeared.

Only for a second.

But I saw it.

Fear.

Rachel continued.

“This was printed from a database, not issued by the hospital.””

Emily nodded.

“I knew he would try this.””

I looked at her.

“You knew?””

She lowered her eyes.

“I suspected.””

My anger returned.

“You suspected my entire life could be fake and you didn’t tell me?””

Emily looked like I had hit her.

“I was trying to protect you.””

The same words.

Again.

I hated those words now.

“Everyone keeps saying that.””

Emily stepped closer.

“Daniel, listen.””

“No.””

My voice cracked.

“I spent two years grieving you.””

Her eyes filled.

“I know.””

“I buried you.””

“I know.””

“I raised Noah thinking I lost his mother.””

She cried silently.

“I know.””

“Then I find out you’re alive.””

I pointed toward the document.

“Then I find out there are more secrets.””

Emily looked down.

“I was scared.””

“Of me?””

“No.””

“Then of what?””

She looked at Mark.

“Of what he would do.””

Mark laughed.

“You always blame me.””

Emily turned.

“Because it’s true.””

The room went quiet.

Then Mark stepped closer.

“You want the real story, Daniel?””

I looked at him.

“Go ahead.””

Emily shook her head.

“Don’t.””

But I needed answers.

I needed something real.

Mark looked at me.

“The night of the accident, Emily wasn’t running from me.””

Emily’s face changed.

“She was coming to meet me.””

My stomach tightened.

“What?””

Mark smiled.

“She wanted answers.””

Emily looked at him.

“That’s a lie.””

“Is it?””

He turned to me.

“She found out I was Noah’s biological father.””

The words hit the room.

Noah looked between us.

Confused.

I felt like I couldn’t breathe.

Emily grabbed my hand.

“Daniel, don’t listen.””

Mark continued.

“She was going to leave you.””

“No.””

Emily whispered.

“No, I wasn’t.””

Mark ignored her.

“She planned to take Noah and disappear.””

My eyes moved to Emily.

“Is that true?””

She shook her head.

“Daniel, please.””

“Is it true?””

“No.””

Her answer was immediate.

“I never wanted to leave you.””

“Then why were you meeting him?””

Emily looked away.

And that was the answer.

There was something.

Something she wasn’t saying.

“I met him because I found out something.””

“What?””

She took a breath.

“I found out Noah’s medical records had been changed.””

My stomach tightened.

“The hearing?””

She nodded.

“Someone altered his diagnosis history.””

“Why?””

Emily looked at Mark.

“Because someone wanted to make it appear that Noah had inherited something from his biological father.””

Rachel frowned.

“Why would anyone do that?””

Emily’s voice became quiet.

“To create proof.””

I looked at her.

“Proof of what?””

“That Mark had a connection to Noah.””

The room went silent.

Mark’s expression darkened.

Emily continued.

“He wanted custody.””

My heart dropped.

“And Victoria?””

Emily looked toward her.

“She helped him.””

Victoria shook her head.

“No.””

Emily stared at her.

“You gave him my hospital records.””

Victoria began crying.

“I didn’t know what he would do.””

“You knew enough.””

“I was trapped.””

Mark suddenly stepped toward Victoria.

“Careful.””

The fear on Victoria’s face returned.

I noticed it.

She wasn’t afraid of being exposed.

She was afraid of him.

“Daniel,” Victoria whispered.

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

Then she reached into her jacket.

Everyone froze.

She pulled out a small flash drive.

“I kept a copy.””

Mark’s face changed instantly.

“What did you do?””

Victoria backed away.

“The one thing you never expected.””

Mark moved toward her.

I stepped between them.

“What’s on it?””

Victoria looked at me.

“Everything.””

Mark’s voice became dangerous.

“Give it to me.””

“No.””

For the first time, Victoria didn’t look afraid.

She looked determined.

“I’m done being your weapon.””

Mark stared at her.

“You think this changes anything?””

Then he smiled.

A cold, empty smile.

“Daniel still doesn’t know the worst part.””

I looked at him.

“What?””

Mark looked at Noah.

Then at Emily.

Then back at me.

“The reason Emily disappeared…”

He paused.

“…wasn’t because I made her.””

Emily’s face went pale.

Mark continued:

“She disappeared because she found out Noah wasn’t the only child involved.””

My heart stopped.

“What are you talking about?””

Nobody answered.

May you like

Then Mark said the sentence that changed everything:

“Daniel, you have another son.””
