Chapter 6: The Man At The Door

“Open the door.””

The voice came again.

Calm.

Almost polite.

That was the part that terrified me.

A dangerous person should sound dangerous.

They should shout.

They should threaten.

They shouldn’t stand outside your house speaking like an old friend asking to come inside.

Noah grabbed my hand.

“Daddy…”

I looked down at him.

His eyes were wide.

He could feel the fear in the room.

Children always knew.

Even when adults tried to hide it.

Emily moved closer to him.

“Daniel, get him away from the door.””

I nodded.

My body finally reacted.

I lifted Noah into my arms and moved toward the hallway.

Victoria stood frozen near the kitchen.

“Where are you going?”” I whispered.

She looked at me.

“He’ll hurt him.””

The way she said it told me everything.

Not a guess.

Not a fear.

A certainty.

“You know what he does.””

Victoria swallowed.

“Yes.””

“Then tell me.””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“He doesn’t stop until he gets what he wants.””

Another knock.

Three slow hits.

Everyone jumped.

“Daniel.””

Mark’s voice drifted through the door.

“I know you’re in there.””

My grip tightened around Noah.

Emily looked at the windows.

“He can’t see us.””

Rachel shook her head.

“He already knows.””

I looked at her.

“How?””

Rachel pointed toward Victoria’s phone.

The message.

The picture.

“He has been watching.””

The room went silent.

Then the front door handle moved.

Slowly.

Once.

Twice.

Someone trying to open it.

Noah buried his face into my shoulder.

I felt anger rise through my fear.

This man had taken two years from me.

Two years with Emily.

Two years of Noah’s life.

And now he was standing outside my home.

Trying to take my son.

I stepped forward.

Emily grabbed my arm.

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I can’t hide forever.””

“You can’t fight him like this.””

“Then what do I do?””

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Keep Noah safe.””

The door handle stopped moving.

For a moment, everything was quiet.

Then Mark spoke.

“Victoria.””

Her face changed.

“Don’t answer.””

But Mark continued.

“You know I don’t like being ignored.””

Victoria closed her eyes.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

I lowered my voice.

“What did he do to you?””

She whispered:

“Everything.””

The answer was so quiet I almost missed it.

“Daniel…”

She looked at me.

“I need you to understand something.””

“What?””

“If he gets inside…”

She looked at Noah.

“He won’t leave with just him.””

My stomach tightened.

“What does that mean?””

Victoria didn’t answer.

Emily did.

“He knows too much.””

I looked at her.

“What?””

Emily stepped closer.

“Mark doesn’t just want Noah.””

She glanced at the door.

“He wants control.””

Another knock.

This time louder.

“Victoria.””

Mark’s voice became sharper.

“Tell Daniel the truth.””

Everyone froze.

My eyes moved to Victoria.

“What truth?””

She looked terrified.

“Daniel…”

The door shook slightly.

“Tell him why you really came here.””

My heart dropped.

I stared at her.

“What is he talking about?””

Victoria looked away.

“Tell me.””

She didn’t answer.

“Victoria.””

Finally, she whispered:

“I wasn’t supposed to marry you.””

The words hurt more than I expected.

Even after everything.

Even after all the lies.

They still hurt.

“What?””

She cried silently.

“Mark told me to get close to you.””

Emily closed her eyes.

“I knew it.””

I stepped back.

“How long?””

“From the beginning.””

The room felt smaller.

“When we met?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

I looked at Noah.

The memories rushed back.

Victoria meeting him for the first time.

Victoria bringing him toys.

Victoria learning his routines.

Victoria asking about his school.

His appointments.

His hearing aid.

Every innocent moment suddenly felt different.

“You were collecting information.””

She looked ashamed.

“At first.””

“At first?””

Her voice broke.

“Then I fell in love with him.””

She looked at Noah.

“With both of you.””

I shook my head.

“I don’t know what to believe anymore.””

“I know.””

The honesty made it worse.

“I know you have every reason to hate me.””

Outside, Mark laughed softly.

“You see?””

His voice carried through the door.

“She always tells the truth when she’s scared.””

Victoria flinched.

Mark continued.

“She was never brave enough to leave.””

I looked toward the door.

“You’re a coward.””

Silence.

Then:

“Daniel.””

His voice changed.

“You have no idea what you’re dealing with.””

I stepped closer.

“You threatened my son.””

“No.””

A pause.

“I protected what was mine.””

My hands clenched.

“He’s not yours.””

Another silence.

Then Mark said:

“Ask Emily.””

I looked at my wife.

Emily looked pale.

Mark continued.

“Ask her who was there when she woke up.””

Emily whispered:

“Don’t listen.””

But Mark’s voice kept coming.

“Ask her who held her hand when she was afraid.””

I looked at Emily.

“Is that true?””

She looked away.

The silence was enough.

“Emily?””

She took a shaky breath.

“When I woke up…”

Her voice trembled.

“I didn’t know where I was.””

I waited.

“There was someone there.””

“Mark?””

She nodded.

“Yes.””

My chest tightened.

“What happened?””

Emily looked at me.

“He told me you were dead.””

I felt sick.

“He told me you moved on.””

“No.””

She nodded.

“He showed me pictures.””

“What pictures?””

“Pictures of you.””

My breathing slowed.

“He said you had a new life.””

I looked at Victoria.

The woman who had entered my home.

The woman who had replaced Emily.

“He showed you me with Victoria.””

Emily nodded.

“He said you didn’t want me back.””

My heart broke.

“I would never.””

“I know.””

She touched my hand.

“That’s why I tried to come home.””

“What stopped you?””

Emily looked toward the door.

“Mark.””

The lights suddenly flickered.

Once.

Twice.

Then came back on.

Everyone froze.

Rachel looked at the security panel.

Her face changed.

“What?””

She walked toward it.

“The cameras.””

“What about them?””

She stared at the screen.

“They’re offline.””

My stomach dropped.

“How?””

Rachel looked at me.

“Because someone inside the system turned them off.””

Everyone looked at Victoria.

She immediately shook her head.

“No.””

I wanted to believe her.

But trust had become something fragile.

Something I couldn’t hold anymore.

Then Noah spoke.

Quietly.

“Daddy.””

I turned.

“What is it?””

He pointed toward the hallway.

“The man.””

My blood froze.

“What man?””

Noah pointed at the closet door.

The small closet beneath the stairs.

“The man who talks to Victoria.””

Victoria’s face went white.

“What?””

Noah looked confused.

“He was there before.””

I slowly turned toward Victoria.

“What is he talking about?””

She couldn’t answer.

Because at that exact moment…

The closet door opened.

Slowly.

By itself.

A man stepped out.

Tall.

Dark jacket.

Cold eyes.

And a smile I would never forget.

“Hello, Daniel.””

He looked at Noah.

Then smiled.

“I finally get to meet my son.””

Emily screamed:

“Don’t touch him!””

Mark looked at her.

Then back at me.

“You really should have asked more questions before you married her.””

He took one step forward.

And in his hand was a document.

A birth certificate.

May you like

With Noah’s name on it.

But not mine.
